Key information for those who have accepted a postgraduate teacher training programme offer, starting 2017
Conditions of offer
Your offer is bespoke to you, depending on what you have/have not already achieved (ie degree, skills tests etc). Meeting conditions of your offer is your responsibility and you need to provide evidence that all conditions have been met. We can check skills tests, DBS and medical clearance on your behalf.
If you have not already shown us, in person, your original GCSE certificates or official examination board statement of results (a letter from your school is NOT sufficient), you will need to do so prior to starting the course. You can take these to the Admissions Team, prior to starting the programme, or bring them with you on the first day.
If a degree is a condition of your offer and you were awaiting results when interviewed, email us a copy of your transcript in the first instance but we will need to see your original transcript/certificate in person prior to starting the course. Again you can take this to our Admissions Team in advance or bring it with you on the first day. This also applies if you did not bring your original degree certificate to interview.
If you have school experience as a condition of your offer, before the start of the course you will need to email us a statement on school letter headed paper confirming your name, the dates and duration you undertook the school experience and the setting you were in. Please ensure this is signed by an appropriate person within the school (ie Headteacher, Head of Department etc) and details their job role.
Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course
If a SKE course is a condition of your offer, you must complete it in ample time before starting the course. You will then need to send us official confirmation prior to the course starting. This must include the length of the SKE you undertook.
Numeracy and Literacy Skills Tests
We have access to the online system to determine when applicants have passed/failed attempts at their skills tests. Please let us know the dates your tests are booked to prevent you being chased unnecessarily. When you pass the tests you do not need to inform us, but you are advised to keep the confirmation letters issued by NCTL as evidence may be needed in future.
A medical questionnaire will be sent to the postal address on your application form. You must complete this as per the instructions and return it immediately in the pre-paid envelope provided. Medical Clearance is carried out by the LJMU Occupation Health Unit. If you have any queries regarding this process, call them directly on 0151 231 3319.
Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check (formerly CRB)
You will receive an email confirmation to start this process and you will already have received a separate email outlining key information in relation to the DBS process. Salaried School Direct trainees must have their DBS issued by the employing school in advance of the September start and should contact the school to make the necessary arrangements.
Fees, Funding and Finance
If you have any queries about fees, funding and finance, contact our Student Advice team on 0151 904 6056.
Some courses are eligible for a bursary, subject to relevant criteria. Further information can be found on the Department for Education website. For eligible courses and students, bursaries will be processed once you enrol on the programme so there is nothing you need to do in advance. For any bursary queries, please contact the National College of Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) to discuss eligibility.
Having a Masters or PhD qualification can impact the amount of bursary you receive for eligible courses. If you have either of these qualifications, please ensure we have details and have seen your certificates, to ensure that you are awarded the correct bursary amount.
If you have been awarded a scholarship, please send us a copy of your confirmation immediately as this is awarded instead of a bursary.
If you are relocating to study and wish to move into Student Accommodation via LJMU, please visit the accommodation website or call: 0151 231 4166.
Preparing to start
You should already have received a target setting form with reading/actions to complete before starting the course and bespoke targets for you, derived from your interview. Please ensure this is completed prior to the course as it will be discussed and built on when you begin your training. If you have not yet received your target setting form, please contact us.
PGCE and PGDE courses are full-time from the moment you begin your training and you should expect to be either at University or in school from approximately 8.30am to 4.30pm most days.
The start date for School Direct routes is: Tuesday 29th August 2017
The start date for University led routes is: Monday 4th September 2017
Postgraduate Teacher Training courses normally follow school term dates. As these vary considerably, you should not book any holidays before you can check the term dates of your placement school(s). University-based trainees will normally finish their programme at the end of June but any days of school absence may need to be ‘made up’ in July. School Direct trainees should clarify end of course dates with the lead school.
