Welcome to the Department of Computer Science
A community that encourages excellence and innovation
There has never been a more exciting time to study a computing based subject. The Internet and computer technology underpin most aspects of modern life from smartphones and tablets, through communication, and entertainment to cars and medicine. Most aspects of our lives rely on devices or systems that that are computer based. Our teaching and research revolves around the application of computer science to solve complex real world problems. As a highly research active department we ensure that the expertise we develop is used in our teaching. We aim to deliver high quality teaching and research and we ensure that our curriculum is industry focused through extensive partnership with business and industry.

Our specialities and research
The Department has a rich research base
Although the Department of Computer Science specializes in a variety of research areas, it is specifically interested in the following specialisms:
- Network and information security
- Networking and Distributed Systems
- Computer games technology
- Applied computing
- Critical infrastructure protection
Members from our Department have created an impressive publication output and have secured high levels of external funding, including €13.9 million European Union funding for our work with Aniketos, €2.6 million for our work with the What to do With the Wi-Fi Wild West (Wi-5) project and £40,000 for our Virtual Cloud-Based Cyber Security Training Platform (VIBRANT) project.
Our research community are also involved in various international research conferences, such as the IEEE and ACM conferences.
In the latest research assessment (Research Excellence Framework 2014) we submitted to the Unit of Assessment 11, Computer Science and Informatics. 80% of our research impact within this unit was rated as being at international level.
The Department of Computer Science has a strong track record of collaborating with industry, having previously used our expertise to work with organisations such as the BBC, Panasonic, EPSRC and Thales. The Department also works with local, regional and national organisations through student placement, research, consultancy, short-course activity and knowledge transfer partnerships.Read more about our research
