Research within the Department
Producing world-leading research
In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF2014) assessment, 98% of the research submitted by the Department was considered world leading, of international importance or recognised internationally.
The REF2014 exercise also recognised the influence our research has in improving people’s lives. This impact can be seen from our impact case studies within maritime risk assessment and materials engineering.
Since the 1970s the Department of Maritime and Mechanical Engineering has established a distinguished reputation in the following research areas: mechanical engineering, marine engineering, maritime management, ports and logistics, and advanced manufacturing technology.
The Department’s key research themes include:
- Safe maritime operations
- Energy efficiency
- Efficient maritime operations and logistics
- Engineering and systems design
- Advanced manufacturing technology and materials
- Internet of Things
To cement this reputation, we have developed an international network of knowledge partners within the maritime and engineering sectors. We also work with universities throughout Europe.
The Department leads the University’s engagement in marine and maritime research and, through its International Association of Maritime Universities membership, is connected to a world-wide network of 53 maritime universities from around the world.
Thanks to our successes within research, our academic courses are kept at the forefront of developments in the field and our students study alongside leading experts.
The Department’s research also supports innovation in the engineering and maritime industries and helps our members form key connections with both international universities and research and development centres.
In the future, we plan to continue developing our world leading research, which supports our teaching and supports the local, national and global economy with innovative knowledge and technology transfer.
Research conducted by the Department of Maritime and Mechanical Engineering is focused on the following areas:
- Maritime logistics and offshore engineering
- Mechanical engineering and materials
- Advanced manufacturing electrical power
