Fire Fighting courses at LJMU Maritime Centre:

Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (STCW A-VI/1-2)

Duration: Two and a half days

Prerequisites: ENG1 medical certificate, or equivalent, as an indicator of fitness and/or an assessment for fitness carried out by LJMU.

Accreditation/Approvals: MCA as per the STCW Code section STCW A-VI/I-2

Overviews: This two and a half day course provides training to the new seafarers who are about to join their first ship and prepares them for taking first aid actions for fighting fires on-board a ship. 

After having completed this course, they can take actions according to ship’s prescribed procedures but more importantly understand the precautions required to mitigate risks that may lead to a fire on-board.

Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting Updating (Refresher) (STCW A-VI/1-2)

Duration: One day

Prerequisites: 

  1. An existing Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (or equivalent) Certificate. Seafarers who have six months or more sea service prior to 1 August 1998 and were exempt from basic safety courses do not need to provide the FP&FF certificate but an evidence of their sea time will need to be sited
  2. ENG1 medical certificate, or equivalent, as an indicator of fitness and/or an assessment for fitness carried out by LJMU

Accreditation/Approvals: MCA as per the STCW Code section STCW A-VI/I-2

Overviews: This one day course provides an opportunity to seafarers to refresh their firefighting skills, particularly the skills that cannot be refreshed on-board i.e. to practice with live fires and thus maintain their initial skills gained during FP&FF full course. 

The course is designed to provide maximum time on practical firefighting skills, hence candidates must be physically and mentally prepared to spend most of their time on fire ground.

Training in Advanced Fire Fighting (STCW A-VI/3)

Duration: Four days

Prerequisites: 

  1. An existing Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (or equivalent) or its Updating Certificate
  2. ENG1 medical certificate, or equivalent, as an indicator of fitness and/or an assessment for fitness carried out by LJMU

Accreditation/Approvals: MCA as per the STCW Code section SCTW A-VI/3 

Overviews: This course develops candidates’ firefighting skills gained in FP&FF course and experience of working on-board ships. It is a mandatory certificate for obtaining CoC as deck or engineer officers. The training is split between theory and practical sessions as detailed in the MNTB course standard. Practical sessions are carried out in the fire ground, hence physical fitness is mandatory. 

The training covers specific procedures for fighting fires on-board ships with particular emphasis on control of fire parties, communication with shore based organisations and other areas from ‘command perspective’.

Training in Advanced Fire Fighting Updating Route 1 (STCW A-VI/3)

Duration: Half day

Prerequisites: 

  1. Advanced Fire Fighting (or equivalent) or its Updating Certificate
  2. Self-declaration form for the AFF Route 1 Updating course
  3. ENG1 medical certificate, or equivalent, as an indicator of fitness and/or an assessment for fitness carried out by LJMU

Accreditation/Approvals: MCA as per the STCW Code section SCTW A-VI/3 

Overviews: This course refreshes candidates’ knowledge and skills required to maintain the competency for AFF course for skills that cannot be practised on-board in the following areas:

  1. Control firefighting operations aboard ship
  2. Organise and train fire parties
  3. Inspect and service fire detection and extinguishing systems and equipment
  4. Investigate and compile reports on incidents involving fire

Duration: One day

Prerequisites: 

  1. Advanced Fire Fighting (or equivalent) or its Updating Certificate
  2. ENG1 medical certificate, or equivalent, as an indicator of fitness and/or an assessment for fitness carried out by LJMU

Accreditation/Approvals: MCA as per the STCW Code section SCTW A-VI/3

Overviews: This course refreshes candidates’ knowledge and skills required to maintain the competency for AFF course for skills in the following areas:
