Making a Green Impact at LJMU

LJMU has completed a successful first year running the Green Impact sustainability programme for staff.

The programme involves staff joining up as teams to carry out actions that range in topic, from those relating to waste, energy and water to building community and wellbeing within teams.

Some actions are quick and easy, while others are slightly more challenging. Over the academic year, teams achieve points for their actions with different scores achieving different levels of awards.

Hundreds of sustainability actions completed

The 2025/26 academic year was the first year Green Impact has been run at LJMU and it proved to be a great success:

  • Seven teams took part with each achieving an award
  • Three teams achieved gold, one team achieved silver, and three achieved bronze
  • In total, 328 actions for sustainability were completed

Many actions completed included sharing information with their wider teams such as reminders to turns lights and equipment off when leaving, how to purchase food using Too Good to Go on campus or how to recycle different materials. Other actions included going for a team walk in nature, hosting a stationery amnesty, or completing Carbon Literacy Training.

Student experiences

The programme also benefits students who audit teams’ actions at the end of the programme. Auditing proved popular with students with 15 taking part in the day which included auditor training in the morning before short interviews with staff teams in the afternoon.

Student feedback was positive, with many crediting staff efforts, expressing pride that their lecturers were demonstrating commitment to sustainability, and expressing gratitude for the experience.
