“Why would you not want those skills?” Ellie, system head of the LJMU e-Racing Team, is talking about the expertise being a member of the team has brought her. And she’s talking about it from Silverstone!
The LJMU e-Racing Team is made up of talented students from a variety of different degrees and disciplines. Engineering students help design, build and race the car, but there are also key roles for students from other degree programmes - such as marketing, business and media. LJMU’s e-Racing Team gain industry experience, travel the world, make new friends… and many have gone on to secure a dream job.
“These are just some of the reasons why high-calibre students join the LJMU e-Racing Team,” says deputy team manager, George Growcott.
LJMU e-Racing Team competed at Silverstone recently - their first year competing as an electric team. Electric vehicles are immensely complex, so the team's two-year build cycle for their first electric vehicle was absolutely necessary. George explains: “The competition they competed in, Class 2, requires the teams to design a full car, have its manufacturing and costs planned out and to build a business case where the team pitch the car to judges in a ‘Dragon's Den’-style situation.”
The team did incredibly well and finished 4th in the Design, Business and Cost & Manufacturing competitions – culminating in a 5th placed finish overall. George says: “These fantastic efforts also meant we finished as the 2nd best UK-based university.”
Looking to the new year, the LJMU e-Racing Team are already underway with their 2019 Class 1 entry, where they will compete on the track at Silverstone with the car that they designed for this year's Class 2 competition.
