Robert MacDonald was born in Toxteth in 1951 and was educated at Smithdown Road Secondary Modern Secondary Modern School and Anfield Comprehensive. After two overland trans Sahara expeditions, where he lived with the Tauareg Nomads, he returned to Liverpool University School of Architecture and obtained two First Class Degrees and went on to complete a Phd by Research; his topic was The Appropriation of Space inside the Working Class Home which was published In Architecture & Comportment by Georgi Press, Switzerland in 1980. Robert has practiced architecture in Zambia, Glasgow, Wales and Liverpool. He designed and built housing, schools and factories for the World Bank in Central Africa. In Zambia during his evenings he spent his time as a stage manager and at weekends learnt to play tennis. He was Line Judge in the Zambian Open in Lusaka. In Glasgow he designed and regenerated Urban Tenement housing in the East End of the City and in Wales he designed a self build house. Rob is most proud to have designed numerous new bult Housing Cooperatives.
Rob has been a member of research and teaching staff for over 25 years and during this time he has taught at all levels, including undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

President Emeritus Liverpool Architectural Society, WAN World Architecture News Health Care Judge (2010), Roscoe Citizenship Award (2014) for Life Long Services to Mental Health presented by Lord David Alton & Professor Nigel Weatherill VC. Rob was appointed Ambassador for Conferences by Club Liverpool in (2015).
Since 1989 Rob has been The Reader in Architecture at Liverpool John Moores University and his research focuses on Therapeutic Environments, Architecture for Good Mental Health and Well Being, Design for Dementia including a book chapter on "Dementia and The Environment". He has published in "The Design for Mental Health Journal" about a new Prescription for Psychiatry and The Book "DIY Integrated City". Currently, Rob is monitoring and developing The User Engagement of The BRE Dementia Home at The Watford Innovation Park. The Intellectual Property Rights of this project have been established by The LJMU Research and Innovation Services. A programme of engagement with Service Users has commenced and future post occupancy will conducted.
Recently he was funded by The University to visit The Royal College of Surgeons, Physik Garden, Welcome Foundation Library, Finsbury Health Centre, Peckham Pioneering Health Centre and The Maggies Cancer Care Building at Charring Cross. Rob has been made a trustee of the Peckham Pioneering Health Centre (1923).
Rob was appointed a Design Champion and Service User for MerseyCare NHS Trust and a member of The Performance and Investment Committee (PIC) after being warmly welcomed by the service users, carers and The None Executive Chairman.
Rob is the elected Chairman of The Patients Reference Panel at his General Practice in Crosby and Blundellsands. In 2015 Rob has been invited to give the Keynote address, about a service users perspective, to The International Conference of Dementia and Facilities Management at Silverstone, Milton Keynes.
It's Robs belief, that based on his own personal experiences of Mental Health, creative collaboration, cooperation, conversation and user participation ought to be at the centre of making good health care architecture.Rob has made two presentations, after training from the Drama School, two presentations about mental well being, one on World Mental Health Day also a workshop to Midwifes on the International Day of the Midwife.
On the 8th of February 2018, Rob was invited to deliver a major Keynote Lecture about Mental Health and Dementia, to the International BRE in The Millbank Tower, Westminster London. The BRE have building Innovation Parks in the UK, China, Brazil and Canada and LJMU is partnering in the development, design and construction of a Dementia Friendly Home. This is leading the way in Robs research about Dementia Friendly Environments.
