I served with Merseyside Police for 30 years and gained a broad range of experience in operational and investigative roles, including as Senior Investigating Officer leading investigations into offences involving Hate Crime, Domestic Abuse, Volume Crime and Homicide. I retired from the police service in 2021 as a Detective Superintendent in the Merseyside Police Professional Standards Department, where I dealt with police misconduct, death and serious injury involving police contact, complaints against police and internal corruption.

In 2006, I completed the national Hostage and Crisis Negotiator (HCN) course and subsequently trained and operated as a HCN coordinator and Counter Terrorism HCN coordinator. I led the Merseyside Police Cadre as their Force HCN Coordinator. In addition, I trained as a Senior Investigating Officer and was a member of the Force Cadre responding to incidents involving Homicide, Unexplained Death and Crime in Action.

In 2012, I was awarded his Master’s degree in Critical and Major Incident Psychology from University of Liverpool.
I subsequently became the Head of Special Branch, where I was the Authorising Officer (RIPA 2000) and had responsibility to mitigate the threat from terrorism and domestic extremism within Merseyside, while working as part of the wider Counter Terrorism network.

In addition, I was also the Police Commander for Wirral for 3 years, where I was a key stakeholder on the local safeguarding boards and I worked collaboratively with senior leaders within the Local Authority and Public Health, to develop and enhance the safeguarding arrangements for children, young people and vulnerable people within the Borough.

I was appointed as a Lecturer in the Liverpool Centre for Advanced Policing Studies in July 2021.

In February 2023, I was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in the Liverpool Centre for Advanced Policing Studies, with lead responsibility for student experience and employability.
