Dr Geert Thyssen

Biography

I am a Senior Lecturer within the School of Education.

My first experiences as an academic were at the University of Leuven (Belgium), first as a Teaching Assistant responsible for practically coordinating an international Masters of Educational Studies programme (2002-2003) and subsequently as a PhD Fellow and Teaching Assistant (2003-2009) responsible for teaching in the Bachelors in Educational Sciences programme. After having earned my doctorate in Educational Sciences (2009), I briefly worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow on a research project on early school leaving at Maastricht University (The Netherlands). In 2011 I was offered an Assistant Professor position there. In the meantime I had been recruited by Prof. Daniel Tröhler for a research project on schooling as institutional heritage in cultural settings (2010-2011) at the University of Luxembourg. There I successfully applied for an two-year postdoctoral research grant through the Fonds National de la Recherche Luxembourg (ca. €100000) and for a four-year Postdoctoral Fellow position (2011-2015). In this position, together with Assoc. Prof. Karin Priem I co-designed two FNR-funded research projects (€1517000) in the frame of which 3 postdoctoral fellows, 2 PhD fellows and several student assistants could be employed. In 2012, I was invited by the University of Leuven to assume an fixed-term Assistant Professor position involving research and teaching related to educational heritage for the Masters of Science in Social and Cultural Pedagogy programme. From June to July 2016, then, I was invited by the University of Sassari as a Visiting Scientist/Professor during which period I conducted research together with Professor Fabio Pruneri. Finally, from December 2015 to September 2017 I have been a Research Associate at the University of Liege (Research Group "Cultures Sensibles").

I am a member of the International Standing Conference for the History of Education (ISCHE), the European Educational Research Association (EERA), the History of Eduction Society UK (HES), and the Belgian-Dutch History of Education Society (BNVGOO). I have served as a member of the Scientific Board/Reviewing Committee for the 38th Annual Conference of the ISCHE in Chicago, 17th-21st August 2016 and the 39th Annual Conference of the ISCHE in Buenos Aires, 18th-21st July 2017. I am also a convenor of Network 17 (Histories of Education) of the European Educational Research Association (EERA). Finally, I am a member of the International Scientific Board of the peer reviewed journals Espacio, Tiempo y Educación and Rivista di Storia dell'Educazione.

My main interests are in the social and cultural history of education and childhood, with a stress on health and hygiene, the body, food and diet, and educational reform; and a theoretical and methodological focus on "the" visual, audio-visual, material, spatial, sensual and emotional.

I am currently coordinating, together with Prof. Fabio Pruneri (University of Sassari) an EERA- and Stichting Paedagogica Historica-funded research project entitled 'Looking Back Going Forward: School_Time in Flux and Flow in Europe and beyond'. I am also co-editing, together with Prof. Ian Grosvenor (University of Birmingham), a special issue for The Senses and Society entitled ‘Learning to make sense: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Sensory Education and Embodied Enculturation'. The special issue brings into dialogue inter-/sensorial approaches to education as a praxis central to socialisation/enculturation which has always involved embodied learning and imaginaries thereof, rather than mere cognitive processing. As such it covers an array of approaches and topics of relevance within and beyond the field of education.

If you are considering doing a Ph.D under my supervision in one the above or related areas, please contact me directly via email (g.thyssen@ljmu.ac.uk).
