Sapana Basnet Bista is currently completing her PhD under the supervision of Rose Khatri, Professor Padam Simkhada and Dr Kim Ross-Houle. Sapana’s PhD explores the 'Experiences of Persons with Disabilities during Nepal Earthquake 2015: A Qualitative Study. Her PhD aims to explore psychological, physical and financial experiences of persons with disabilities; evaluate emergency preparedness, access to safe evacuation and rehabilitation; and explore experiences faced by emergency and humanitarian responders in implementation of disability inclusive disaster preparedness, recovery and rehabilitation.

Sapana was awarded by 'Community Contribution Impact Award' by the Doctoral Academy at Liverpool John Moores University for her work advocating for the rights of people with disability in Nepal and her skills working with organisations and policy makers to produce and advocacy policy tool with international reach.

Sapana's research interests include health and wellbeing of marginalised population in humanitarian crisis; gender equality and social inclusion, and inclusive disaster preparedness/ management. Sapana holds a MA in Children, Youth and International Development and another MA in Creative and Transactional Writing both from Brunel University, UK.

Currently Sapana is co-leading and managing LJMU Global Challenge Research Fund project 'Gender-Sensitive and Disability-Inclusive Guideline for Emergency'. This project is based in Nepal and in collaboration with Nepal Disabled Women Association.

Most recently, Sapana was research and evaluation team lead for capturing discussions/debated around primary health care and private sector during Global Symposia on Health System Research 2018 for Health Systems Global and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Sapana has extensive experience in consultation, evaluation and monitoring and report writing of several national and international projects.

Sapana also works as a Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL) Specialist for Green Tara Nepal. She has previously worked in The Sethi Partnership Solicitors UK as an Asylum and Immigration Case Worker and other private and charity sectors including Anti-Slavery International UK, Oxfam UK, Nepal Red Cross Society and Whitbread PLC UK.

She is an executive member of Britain Nepal Academic Council, a founding member of Global Consortium for Public Health Research and President of the Nepal Study Society at LJMU.
