Biography

I am a palaeoanthropologist with active field research in the Pliocene and Pleistocene of Africa. My research explores the environmental contexts of the evolution of human behaviour in Africa. I focus on the interpretation of the dynamic aspects of hominin evolution, particularly behaviour and ecology, within accurate environmental settings.

My research into artiodactyl ecomorphology explores the ecological context of human evolution and the use and misuse of uniformitarian precepts to make palaeoecological reconstructions. My group has pioneered several methods to look at environmental change through time. I have also worked extensively studying the ecology and evolution of pigs (Mammalia: Suidae) during the Neogene.

At LJMU I am a co-director of the Research Centre in Evolutionary Anthropology and Palaeoecology. My field work programme focusses on the Homa Peninsula, in Kenya.
