Biography

Professor Jeffery Summers (Professor of Motor Control and Cognitive Neuroscience) received his PhD in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Oregon, USA in 1974. His first appointment was in the Department of Psychology at the University of Melbourne, Australia as a teaching and research academic. He stayed at Melbourne for 18 years reaching the level of Reader before leaving in 1992 to take up the position of Foundation Professor of Psychology at the University of Southern Queensland. In November 1998 he was appointed to the Chair of Psychology at the University of Tasmania. Throughout his career Jeff has held teaching and research positions and has served in a major administrative role as Head of Department/School for 11 years. He has published over 160 peer reviewed journal articles; 30 book chapters; 3 Edited volumes; 1 book. His research interests lie in the field of cognitive neuroscience, particularly human motor control and learning. Early work made significant contributions to understanding the mechanisms underlying disordered gait in Parkinson's disease and use-dependent plasticity in recovery of motor function in chronic stroke patients. In recent years his research has focussed on understanding individual differences in the process of ageing at the behavioural and neural levels using electroencephalography (EEG) and non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS). He is also involved in a longitudinal study involving over 500 older adults that is tracking the effects of engaging in University study on measures of cognitive function and psychological health on an annual basis over a 10-year period. Potential contributing genetic factors are also being explored. A final area of current research, in collaboration with colleagues conducting animal research, is investigating the physiological mechanisms underlying NIBS-induced behavioural change, which are largely unknown. We are using both human and rodent models to refine brain stimulation protocols and examine, in transgenic mice, the effect of stimulation on synaptic plasticity and the formation and enlargement of dendritic spines and axonal sprouting. His research has been funded by grants from the Australian Research Council (ARC) and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).
