Student Access and Publishing Canvas Courses

Student Access and Publishing Canvas Courses

We’ve had many queries this week in relation to student access to Canvas courses. Firstly, please don’t forget that in addition to publishing individual content on your course you also need to publish the course itself. If you fail to publish the course, students will be able to see the course listed on Canvas, but will be unable to go into it.

Publishing your course is a simple process:

  1. Open your course (by clicking on the relevant course card tile on the Canvas dashboard).
  2. Then, simply click the ‘Publish’ button on the right hand side of the course  home page.

Still no luck after publishing?

Click ‘continue reading’ below.

If you’ve still got students struggling to access a course, click on the ‘people’ button on the left hand course menu and check that the student names are listed.

  1. If they are listed, ask the students struggling to contact Canvas Student Support on  0808-189-4061.
  2. If, however, you find you are missing all of your students from the list (after completing enrolment/online registration), make sure you are on (and have published) the right instance of the programme (e.g. Sem1, 18/19 etc.)
  3. If you are on the correct instance and your students are still not listed, contact the programme admin team.

Other tips

If you haven’t read the big announcement on the canvas dashboard, it’s a really useful collection of guidance and links for students. You may want to copy some of it and incorporate it into one of your first announcements. Particularly as, if students close it by mistake or without reading it, they cannot get it back.

In other news we have also moved offices from Tithebarn to Henry Cotton room 217. Our Marsh office is still B005.
