About this course

Gain an in-depth knowledge of Management practice in this course, which includes the application of management skills through a business consultancy project.

This programme is designed for the business leaders of tomorrow, and enables you to join a highly supportive scholarly community and a network of like-minded fellow professionals.

Completing this MSc will take you to the next level of academic achievement. You will develop your skills in leadership and strategy, and gain valuable business acumen needed to be an effective global management professional.

The teaching approach on this course synthesises carefully balanced theoretical content, integrating classic research with contemporary analyses of international business topics.

Advanced Practice - consultancy project 

During the second year of the course, you and your fellow students will undertake a semester-long group consultancy project. Working on a business project brief provided by LJMU in collaboration with industry, the consultancy project enables you to apply the theoretical knowledge you have learnt and gain workplace experience at the same time.

Students are placed into project groups and assigned an industry mentor to help them navigate the consultancy project and provide business and sector insight. Industry mentors help provide a safe environment in which to learn and develop.

Discover the building blocks of your programme

Your programme is made up of a number of core modules which are part of the course framework. Management Theory
20 credits

This module explores the meaning of leadership and management by providing a contemporary and comprehensive introduction to the principal ideas and developments in this area.

Managing Strategy
20 credits

This module focuses more on the knowledge and contribution required by managers generally rather than the specialist seeking to work in a corporate strategy department. It explores strategy from the perspective of all management levels, focusing on the different types and elements of strategy and ways in which they are created and managed.  This module incorporates the Harvard Business School programme 'Microeconomics of competitiveness' within the module, as part of our affiliation with their Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness. 


Management Practice
20 credits

This module aims to put management theory into practice, developing proficiency in core management competencies and awareness of the holistic, interrelated functional dependencies within a business.


Managing Business Research 1
10 credits

This module is designed to ensure that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to conduct Masters-level assignments. It enables you to perform a systematic review of literature for a business management-related topic at Masters level.

Managing Business Research 2
10 credits

This module provides an overview of research approaches for business. It aims to equip you with the necessary foundations in qualitative and quantitative research approaches to prepare a research proposal for your dissertation and apply either or both of the research approaches studied.

Supply Chain Management
10 credits

This module provides an overview of the supply chain and logistic (SC&L) environment including its role and function. It will enable you to adopt a professional approach to SC&L decision-making to develop and implement business solutions.

Marketing Management
10 credits

This module investigates the role and function of marketing within the context of changing consumer demands, globalisation, multi-media communication and social marketing. It also analyses the levers that create the marketing mix for organisations and their relationship to the management skills of analysis, planning and control.

Research Project
60 credits

This module will help you to prepare a research project that applies managerial concepts and research techniques to a significant organisational issue or problem. It will help you to carry out an independent, in-depth research project.

Advanced Business Practice
60 credits

This module provides opportunities for you to develop as part of a team of consultants working on a live business project, applying theoretical knowledge in a practical environment.


Digital Business Management
20 credits

This module prepares students for the ever-changing demands of business management but with a digital edge. It focuses on the interconnections between technology, the organisation, and information systems management. Exploring leading-edge topics, such as Social Commerce, Digital Customer Experience (DCX), Digital Strategy, Big Data and Analytics, AI/ML, Digital Transformation and Blockchain, students will track emerging technologies and organisational trends using real business examples to illustrate key issues and concepts.

An insight into teaching on your course

Study hours

Year 1

Contact hours for lectures, seminars and workshops total 12 hours per week in each of the two taught semesters, scheduled over two or three days maximum and between the hours of 9.00am and 6.00pm.

Year 2

In the second year of study you will spend a semester working on a business consultancy project with the second semester working on your dissertation.

A combination of workshops and tutorials will support progress throughout the consultancy project and dissertation module.

The approach to teaching on this programme is interdisciplinary, enabling you to explore the synergies and interdependencies between different areas of business and management.

Applied learning

The business consultancy project that you will undertake in the second year of study will enable you to gain practical skills and work with students from your course as a team of consultants. You will apply the theoretical knowledge you have gained by undertaking a project for a business, enabling you to gain real workplace skills. 

You will undertake group tutorials and study in our dedicated Management Development Suite, based in a listed building in Liverpool’s historic Georgian Quarter.

How learning is monitored on your programme

To cater for the wide-ranging content of our courses and the varied learning preferences of our students, we offer a range of assessment methods on each programme.

Assessments on this course are designed to ensure that you fulfil your potential at this important stage of your professional development. A variety of methods are used throughout the programme, including:

Feedback is provided in all modules, and extensively in the supporting workshops. In most modules, more than one piece of formal assessment exists, which allows for further feedback to be given during the module.

School facilities

What you can expect from your School

The School is based in the Redmonds Building, in the heart of the bustling Mount Pleasant Campus and Liverpool’s growing Knowledge Quarter. The building is home to high quality lecture theatres and seminar rooms, social spaces, and a café. It is only a short walk from LJMU’s Aldham Robarts Library, which contains all the resources you will require for your studies, and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Liverpool Business School also has a dedicated Management Development Suite, based in a listed building in the historic Georgian Quarter of Liverpool and a short walk from the Redmonds Building. The building has recently undergone £1.2 million investment to provide a professional learning space.

  • IELTS 6.0 (minimum 5.5 in each component)
  • Pearson PTE Academic 64 (minimum 59 in each component for UKVI purposes)
  • RPL is accepted on this programme
