About this course

By completing this Masters degree, your commercial and strategic acumen will be taken to the next level of development, enabling you to make an impressive contribution to contemporary management practice.

The teaching approach on this course synthesises carefully balanced theoretical content, integrating classic research with contemporary analyses of international business topics.

During the second year of the course, you and your fellow students will undertake a semester-long group consultancy project, working on a project brief provided by a business. This project enables you to apply the theoretical knowledge you have learnt and gain workplace experience at the same time.

Your programme is made up of a number of core modules which are part of the course framework. Management Theory and Leadership
20 credits

This module covers leadership and management. It provides a contemporary and comprehensive introduction to the principal ideas and developments in this area.

Economics and Finance
20 credits

This module provides a critical appraisal of financial information in terms of the economic environment. It examines the context within which organisations operate and prepare financial plans.

Strategic Management
20 credits

This module helps to identify the contextual differences which affect strategic decision making in particular organisations. Coursework is integrated into the business simulation.

Managing Business Research 1
10 credits

This module is designed to ensure that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to conduct Masters-level assignments. It enables you to perform a systematic review of literature for a business management-related topic at Masters level.

Managing Business Research 2
10 credits

This module provides an overview of research approaches for business. It aims to equip you with the necessary foundations in qualitative and quantitative research approaches to prepare a research proposal for your dissertation and apply either or both of the research approaches studied.

Management Competencies
20 credits

This module provides a practical approach to develop an evidence-based portfolio of skills necessary in associate-level management. It aims to develop proficiency in core associate-level management competencies and awareness of the holistic, inter-related functional dependencies within a business environment which enable informed management decision making.

Advanced Business Practice

This module provides opportunities for you to develop as part of a team of consultants working on a live business project, applying theoretical knowledge in a practical environment.


Research Project
60 credits

This module will help you to prepare a research project that applies managerial concepts and research techniques to a significant organisational issue or problem. It will help you to carry out an independent, in-depth research project.

Optional Modules

Supply Chain Management
10 credits

This module provides an overview of the supply chain and logistics environment including its role and function. It will enable you to adopt a professional approach to SC&L decision-making to develop and implement business solutions.

Marketing Management
10 credits

This module investigates the role and function of marketing within the context of changing consumer demands, globalisation, multi-media communication and social marketing. It also analyses the levers that create the marketing mix for organisations and their relationship to the management skills of analysis, planning and control.

Managing Human Resourcing Strategy
10 credits

This module provides a conceptual framework for effective employee resourcing. Formative feedback is advanced through workshop participation and the analysis of case studies and scenarios.

An insight into teaching on your course

Study hours

Year 1

Contact hours for lectures, seminars and workshops total 12 hours per week in each of the two taught semesters, scheduled over two or three days maximum and between the hours of 9.00am and 6.00pm.

Year 2

In the second year of study you will spend a semester working on a business consultancy project with the second semester working on your dissertation.

A combination of workshops and tutorials will support progress throughout the consultancy project and dissertation module.

Teaching methods

The approach to teaching on this programme is interdisciplinary, enabling you to explore the synergies and interdependencies between different areas of business and management.

Applied learning

The business consultancy project that you will undertake in the second year of study will enable you to gain practical skills and work with students from your course as a team of consultants. You will apply the theoretical knowledge you have gained by undertaking a project for a business, enabling you to gain real workplace skills. 

You will undertake group tutorials and study in our dedicated Management Development Suite, based in a listed building in Liverpool’s historic Georgian Quarter.

How learning is monitored on your programme

To cater for the wide-ranging content of our courses and the varied learning preferences of our students, we offer a range of assessment methods on each programme. Assessment techniques vary from module to module to reflect relevant assessment approaches and the key learning points of each topic.

Assessments on this course are designed to ensure that you fulfil your potential at this important stage of your professional development. A variety of methods are used throughout the programme, including:

Feedback is provided in all modules, and extensively in the supporting workshops. In most modules, more than one piece of formal assessment exists, which allows for further feedback to be given during the module.

Sue Hill

Programme Leader

Sue has more than 30 years experience of working with universities, companies and students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds across all continents. This experience has been at the heart of her 21 year career at LJMU. Sue is an experienced programme developer and specialises in the teaching of management across cultures and international business and trade at postgraduate level. In addition to these business areas, Sue holds specialist teacher-training qualifications from the University of Cambridge (UCLES) and is active in the development of learning and teaching at LJMU through the PGCert HE. She has taken part in EU-wide research projects and has contributed book chapters on the management of learning in the multicultural classroom (The TEMCU project). Sue is an Associate Member of the Chartered Management Institute and mentor of Liverpool Vision’s 2015 ‘Head for Business’ winners. She also supervises student research at MSc and PhD levels.

This course really enhances employability by enabling students to learn and use management skills, at the same time as gaining a Masters qualification

School facilities

What you can expect from your School

The School is based in the Redmonds Building, in the heart of the bustling Mount Pleasant Campus and Liverpool’s growing Knowledge Quarter. The building is home to high quality lecture theatres and seminar rooms, social spaces, and a café. It is only a short walk from LJMU’s Aldham Robarts Library, which contains all the resources you will require for your studies, and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Liverpool Business School also has a dedicated Management Development Suite, based in a listed building in the historic Georgian Quarter of Liverpool and a short walk from the Redmonds Building. The building has recently undergone £1.2 million investment to provide a professional learning space.
