Introduction to the School
Our School of Education has a well established reputation for delivering high quality initial teacher education in partnership with Primary, Secondary and other education providers in the North West.
Our academic staff have years of professional experience behind them, as Teachers, Head Teachers, Department Heads, Inspectors and Advisers. Members of the team have been involved in national projects and have significant expertise in current, school-focused initiatives and curriculum design.
In the 2014 REF, LJMU's education-related research was ranked fourth in the UK’s Post-92 Universities, with over 60% of work considered world leading or internationally excellent. This research helps ensure our postgraduate courses are at the forefront of developments in the field and that you have an opportunity to study alongside leading experts.
All students are assigned a Personal Tutor who is responsible for your academic and personal progress throughout the course. Support during teaching practice is particularly important and so, in addition to mentoring from school-based staff, you will have visits from a University Liaison Tutor to monitor and support your progress and observe and give feedback on your teaching.
All of our initial teacher education programmes are accredited by the National College of Teaching and Leadership. Students who successfully complete our PGDE programmes graduate with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), the essential accreditation for anyone who wants to teach in state-maintained and special schools in England and Wales.
School Direct is a new route into teaching which is led by schools, working in close collaboration with Initial Teacher Education providers, such as LJMU. It is an alternative route into teaching from traditional mainstream PGCE and PGDE programmes and offers trainees a more school-led approach. LJMU works closely with a number of lead schools across the North West as part of the School Direct initiative.

Programme outline and structure
This is an intensive, full time programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) alongside your academic PGDE award.
University-based study includes: a full time block of three weeks at the start of the course
- one day per week until January
- week-long, full time study blocks between January and June and a number of conference days
Placements are organised in our partnership schools in the Greater Merseyside area. For the majority of the training you will gain your teaching experience in a 'Home School' with a six week placement in an 'alternative' school after Christmas. This innovative model ensures that you genuinely feel part of the staff whilst on school placement and can monitor and gain satisfaction from your impact on your pupils’ progress over time.
You will also be allocated a Teacher Mentor who will organise and supervise your school-based training. Your Mentor will be supported by your LJMU Tutor who will visit your school several times to monitor your progress. Additional professional development sessions are organised in school during placements.
Tutorial support is an important part of the LJMU learning process and you will receive a personalised service that will enable you to set targets and achieve your potential. Your Personal Tutor will support your academic and professional development and will meet with you formally during the year.
You will undertake a significant amount of independent study and preparation to support your course assignments and school-based work and should be prepared to work some evenings and weekends.
University-based training takes place at the IM Marsh campus just four miles from the city centre. Here you will find independent study spaces with IT facilities, a library, access to student welfare and support, a gym and other sports facilities plus a café and shop.
The IM Marsh Library houses the main collections linked to this course and is open from 8am until 11pm during term time. You will also have access to the city centre Aldham Robarts and Avril Robarts libraries, which are open 24/7 during semester.
What you will study on this degree
The University element of the programme is based around six core modules focusing on:
- Professional Practice (a series of school-based investigations of current issues)Developing Reflective Professional Practice (enabling you to effectively evaluate your school-based practice)
- Subject Pedagogy in History (in depth support and practical training in your subject specialist area, drawing on the latest research and classroom-based innovation)
- Pedagogy in Practice (focusing on the skills required for effective teaching and learning including medium-term planning and assessment in your subject)
- Learning Teaching and Assessment (developing your skills in school-based action research so that you can identify what works best for your learners)
- Inclusion (ensuring you are fully prepared to meet the diverse needs of your classes)
The information listed in the section entitled ‘What you will study’ is an overview of the academic content of the programme that will take the form of either core or option modules. Modules are designated as core or option in accordance with professional body requirements and internal Academic Framework review, so may be subject to change. Students will be required to undertake modules that the University designates as core and will have a choice of designated option modules. Additionally, option modules may be offered subject to meeting minimum student numbers.
Academic Framework reviews are conducted by LJMU from time to time to ensure that academic standards continue to be maintained. A review is currently in progress and will be operational for the academic year 2016/2017. Final details of this programme’s designated core and option modules will be made available on LJMU’s website as soon as possible and prior to formal enrolment for the academic year 2016/2017.

How will I be assessed?
The course employs a variety of teaching methods including: lectures, seminars, interactive workshops, group discussion and reflection, problem solving and micro-teaching. Full use is made of online learning through BlackBoard (our virtual learning environment) and web-based resources.
School-based training involves the preparation and delivery of learning sequences and lessons to small groups and whole classes of learners, with expectations and workload increasing during the course. This work is supported by a Teacher-Mentor who will enhance your professional learning experience in school.
Course assessment methods include: critical reflections on research and practice, small scale research projects, the design and analysis of learning experiences, presentations and a portfolio of professional activities.
You will need to monitor your progression towards achieving the professional standards required for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and to maintain a professional development portfolio associated with these.
A final assessment of your achievement of the Teachers’ standards required will be based on observation and assessment of your teaching practice and the evidence base that you develop during training.

Tutors contribute to the development of national education policy and government initiatives and policy in curriculum development, school leadership and governance, and initial teacher education.
Entry requirements (Home)
You should hold, or be expected to achieve, a degree (or recognised equivalent) in History. The degree classification should normally be at 2:1 or above. Strong applicants with a 2:2 will be considered if they have significant school experience prior to application.
Additional requirements for the programme include:
- GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade C or above (or equivalent qualification)
- A demonstrable interest in teaching within the curriculum area. You could show this in a number of ways – time spent in schools, knowledge of the chosen curriculum area, relevant practical experience. A minimum of 10 days’ work experience in a UK secondary school is normally required prior to commencing the programme. We can help to arrange this for successful applicants
Please note: original evidence of GCSE passes (or equivalent) and your degree (if you have already graduated) will be required at interview.
For the purposes of initial teacher training, level 2 numeracy and literacy qualifications are not considered as equivalent to GCSE grade C in Mathematics or English. You are required, by the Department for Education, to undertake Professional Skills Tests in Literacy and Numeracy prior to entry to this programme. Successful completion of the Professional Skills Tests will form part of the conditions of any offer of a place. Further details can be found at Get into Teaching website.
If you accept a formal offer from LJMU you will be required to meet the Department for Education’s standards for physical and mental fitness to teach and clearance to work with children. Further information, including a Declaration of Health questionnaire and details of how to apply for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure, will be sent to you after you have firmly accepted an offer. This course will only run subject to minimum numbers.
Entry requirements (International)
LJMU welcomes applications from international students. In addition to normal entry requirements, you will be expected to demonstrate a very good level of English language competence, for example an IELTS score of 6.0-6.5 or equivalent. Please note: specific courses may require higher levels of English language competence.
If you have applied to study a full-time taught Masters, MRes, MPhil or PhD at LJMU, you should check if you require an Academic Technology Approval Scheme or ATAS certificate. It can take four to six weeks to receive an ATAS certificate, so please make sure you apply as early as possible. You can find out more on the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) website. Please note: international students entering on a Tier 4 visa cannot study part time. Students entering the UK on alternate types of visa may be in a position to study part time. Please contact LJMU’s International Admissions Team for further details before making your application.
In order to obtain a visa you will also need to show evidence that the money required to cover your tuition fees and living expenses has been in your bank account for at least 28 days prior to submitting your visa application. Application and selection
Applicants will be assessed for their:
- depth of relevant subject knowledge
- potential to work effectively at Masters level
- ability to work with others in teams
- ability to manage people and projects
You will be expected to demonstrate:
- an interest and enthusiasm for your chosen subject area
- the ability to make learning exciting and meaningful to young people in a range of contexts
- commitment to supporting learners in areas of challenging social context
- enthusiasm and resilience
You should live within reasonable travelling distance of the University and our partner schools for the duration of the course.
Our selection events usually involve partner school staff and comprise:
- group tasks
- a written task
- an individual interview
- a practical assessment in some subject areas
Your performance in each part of the selection process is graded and a final decision is made on your performance across the day.

Bursaries are available to support those training to teach. The amount of Bursary depends on your subject and degree classification. For further information you should consult the Get into Teaching website.
If you are eligible for a Bursary you do not need to apply for one; once you are enrolled at LJMU you will begin receiving payments from the beginning of your course.
To encourage graduates to train as Science, Technology Mathematics and Languages teachers, Bursaries of up to £25,000 may be available.
Alternatively, if you have a good first degree, you can apply for a scholarship from professional subject bodies such as the IoP, RSC, IMA and BCS.
Full time students on PGDE courses are eligible for the same range of financial support as undergraduate students. This includes:
- a non means-tested student loan to cover your tuition fees
- a means-tested student loan to help cover your living expenses
- a means-tested maintenance grant, which does not have to be paid back
- a means-tested LJMU Bursary worth up to £500, which does not have to be paid back
- You will be charged a tuition fee of £9,000 for your PGDE course - you can take out a tuition fees loan to pay for this
- Your tuition fees loan is not means-tested and covers the full amount of your tuition fees. This money is paid direct to LJMU
- Maintenance loans are means-tested and the amount you receive will depend on your household income (parents’ or partner’s income plus yours)
- You only start repaying your students loan after you graduate and start earning over £21,000
The employment prospects of LJMU teacher training graduates are extremely positive, with most subjects exceeding the national averages in terms of employment.
The programme provides opportunities for engagement with relevant local employment organisations, including schools and teacher recruitment agencies, through on-campus events and school-based placements. You are encouraged to join the relevant professional association for your area of study, extending your professional network.
After completing your PGDE you can progress to the MA Education Practice programme for Newly Qualified Teachers which will enable you to complete a full MA during your first year of employment.

LJMU offers international students the option of completing International Foundation Year and International Year One programmes at the University’s International Study Centre. English language qualifications
All international applicants must have an internationally recognised English language qualification, such as IELTS (International English Language Testing Service). Your English language qualification must have been certified within the last two years for verification purposes. LJMU will accept other UKVI-recognised English language tests providing you attain the appropriate level.

English language support to improve IELTS
If your English language level does not meet the required entry requirements for your course you may still be offered a place on the condition that you successfully complete an English for Undergraduate Study course at LJMU’s International Study Centre.
International students are liable to pay a minimum of 50% of their tuition fees when they complete their enrolment at the University. The outstanding balance must be paid in full within 4 months of your enrolment date.
When you apply for your visa or entry clearance, you will need to provide evidence of having enough money to support yourself for the duration of your programme and to pay for all of your living expenses. The good news is that the cost of living in Liverpool is one of the lowest in England, which means your money will go even further, allowing you to enjoy your student experience to the full.
In addition to academic fees, you must budget for living costs such as accommodation, food, clothing, books, local travel and entertainment. The UKVI requires that students studying outside London must have £7,200 to pay for their living costs (or £800 per month).
LJMU’s undergraduate courses run over an academic calendar of nine months so you will need to show that you have at least £7,200. If your course lasts 6 months you will need to demonstrate you have £4,800.
Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)
Before you can apply for permission to enter or remain in the UK under Tier 4 you will require a valid Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies or CAS. LJMU will only assign a CAS once you have satisfied the conditions of any offer made to you and you satisfy the University’s obligations as a Tier 4 Highly Trusted Sponsor. Academic Technology Approval Scheme Certificate (ATAS)
If you have applied to study an Enhanced Undergraduate Degree (such as an MEng) course at LJMU, you should check if you require an Academic Technology Approval Scheme or ATAS certificate.

Your visa application
As soon as you have received an offer of a place at LJMU you should contact the Entry Clearance Office at the British Embassy, British High Commission or Consular Office in your own country to check whether you need a visa for entry into Britain. You are advised to do this as soon as you can as the visa application process can take a long time.
Please Note: To obtain an Entry Visa you should go to the British Embassy or High Commission in your own country, and present the following documents:
- A valid LJMU Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)
- Evidence of financial support for the programme
- Two recent photographs of yourself (passport-size)
- All relevant educational diplomas and certificates (as stated in your CAS)
- A declaration of your intent to return home on completion of your course of study
The University may make changes to a programme of study or module where such changes are deemed to be beneficial to students, are minor in nature and unlikely to impact negatively upon students or become necessary due to circumstances beyond the control of the University.
