Introduction to the School
In the 2014 REF, LJMU's education-related research was ranked 4th in the UK’s Post-92 Universities, with over 60% of work considered world leading or internationally excellent. This research helps ensure our postgraduate courses are at the forefront of developments in the field and that you have an opportunity to study alongside leading experts.
Our School of Education has a well established reputation for delivering innovative initial teacher education in partnership with Primary and Secondary schools across the North West.
All of our initial teacher education programmes lead to a postgraduate award, such as PGCE or a Postgraduate Diploma in Education with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
QTS is the essential accreditation for anyone who wants to teach in state-maintained and special schools in England and Wales. It demonstrates that you have acquired the competencies and qualities required to be an effective teacher, as determined by the Government’s Teachers’ Standards (2011).
Why study this course at LJMU?
School Direct is a route into teaching featuring a school-centred approach. Bursaries are available on the programme, depending on your degree classification and subject area.
Training includes substantial time spent in school and involves significant training organised by outstanding teachers.
School Direct is offered via a series of school consortia. Each consortium has a Lead School, which works in partnership with LJMU to develop their training programme. While all of the training is based on a framework agreed with the University, each School Direct programme is unique and you are advised to check full details of training and requirements on the Lead School’s web pages.
Applications for Primary School Direct places are made to Lead Schools via UCAS. The interview and selection process is conducted by school staff in association with LJMU.
All courses lead to Qualified Teacher Status and support the development of your:
- critical understanding of educational theory and practice
- reflective practice linked to professional development
- practitioner research skills for effective teaching and learning
- understanding and application of subject knowledge

Programme outline and structure
Take the School Direct route into teaching and gain Qualified Teacher Status for primary level.
Although you will spend the majority of time in school, the School Direct Programmes at LJMU include University-based training sessions which take place at the IM Marsh campus. These include: a week long summer school at the end of August, weekly campus sessions and a number of conference days or full weeks of training. Additional training and professional development programmes are organised in school by the Lead School. Two of our School Direct programmes at Knutsford and Turton are delivered off site at the schools by LJMU staff. Trainees on these programmes are still expected to attend the Summer School
As this is a postgraduate course, you should expect to undertake a significant amount of independent study and preparation, not only to support your course assignments, but also your school-based work.
This intense programme is tightly focused on providing you with the skills and knowledge required. Tutorial support is an important part of the process and you will receive a personalised service that will enable you to set targets and achieve to your highest potential.
Your personal tutor will meet with you regularly to monitor your progress, provide guidance and advice and set targets for your development.
You will also be allocated a teacher mentor who will organise and supervise your school-based training. Your mentor will be supported by an LJMU tutor who will visit school several times during the year to monitor your progress.

What you will study on this degree
The University element of the programme is based around modules focusing on:
- developing your subject and pedagogical knowledge in order to support you in becoming a reflective, skilled and effective practitioner
- critiquing effective approaches to learning, teaching and assessment in your subject and/or age phase
- promoting your ability to design inclusive, engaging and impactful sequences of lessons to meet the diverse needs of all learners
- informed and deliberate use of educational research to improve pupils’ learning
The information listed in the section entitled ‘What you will study’ is an overview of the academic content of the programme that will take the form of either core or option modules. Modules are designated as core or option in accordance with professional body requirements and internal Academic Framework review, so may be subject to change. Students will be required to undertake modules that the University designates as core and will have a choice of designated option modules. Additionally, option modules may be offered subject to meeting minimum student numbers.
Academic Framework reviews are conducted by LJMU from time to time to ensure that academic standards continue to be maintained. A review is currently in progress and will be operational for the academic year 2017/2018. Final details of this programme’s designated core and option modules will be made available on LJMU’s website as soon as possible and prior to formal enrolment for the academic year 2017/2018.

How will I be assessed?
School based training involves the preparation and delivery of learning sequences and lessons to small groups and whole classes of learners, with expectations and workload increasing during the course. This work is supported by your teacher-mentor who will support your professional learning experience in school.
The course is delivered through a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars, interactive workshops, group discussion and reflection, problem solving and micro-teaching. We also make full use of Canvas, the University’s Virtual Learning Environment.A variety of assessment methods are used during the course including:critical reflections on practice, literature review, small scale research projects and design and analysis of learning experiences.
During your training, you will monitor your progression towards achieving Qualified Teachers Status (QTS) and will need to maintain an appropriate professional development portfolio to support this.
A final assessment will be based on observation of your teaching practice and the evidence base that you develop during training.
Staff research interests
LJMU staff offer a wide range of expertise which informs programme learning.
Staff contribute to the development of national education policy and government initiatives and policy in curriculum development, school leadership and governance, and initial teacher education.
Entry requirements (Home)
Applications are made through UCAS to the Lead School. Each applicant will be considered in consultation with an LJMU admissions tutor and may be asked to attend a selection event in school.
Selection is based on performance in teaching and written tasks and interviews which may involve the school’s learners. The selection process will be led by the schools’ teachers and senior leaders and may involve LJMU tutors.
Normally you will need:
- a first degree of 2.2 or above (some Lead Schools will require a 2:1)
- GCSE Grade C or equivalent in English, Maths and a science subject
- QTS Skills Tests
- evidence of experience in a UK school setting
- a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (prior to starting the programme)
Entry requirements (International)
LJMU welcomes applications from international students. In addition to normal entry requirements, you will be expected to demonstrate a very good level of English language competence, for example an IELTS score of 7.0 overall and a minimum of 6.5 in all components or equivalent. Please note: specific courses may require higher levels of English language competence. If you have applied to study a full-time taught Masters, MRes, MPhil or PhD at LJMU, you should check if you require an Academic Technology Approval Scheme or ATAS certificate. It can take four to six weeks to receive an ATAS certificate, so please make sure you apply as early as possible. You can find out more on the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) website. Alternatively, contact LJMU’s International Admissions Team for guidance. Please note: international students entering on a Tier 4 visa cannot study part time. Students entering the UK on alternate types of visa may be in a position to study part time. Please contact LJMU’s International Admissions Team for further details before making your application. In order to obtain a visa you will also need to show evidence that the money required to cover your tuition fees and living expenses has been in your bank account for at least 28 days prior to submitting your visa application. Application and selection
Selection is based on performance in teaching, written tasks and interviews. Interview and selection will be conducted by staff from the Lead School in association with LJMU staff.
Shortlisted applicants for this course will be interviewed.

Please Note: All international qualifications are subject to a qualification equivalency check via NARIC.
School Direct (tuition fee) trainees will be charged a tuition fee of £9,250 for their course. Trainees are eligible for the same range of financial support as undergraduate students.
- a non means-tested student loan to cover your tuition fees: this money is paid direct to LJMU
- a means-tested student loan to help cover some of your living expenses
- a means-tested maintenance grant, which does not have to be paid back
Please note: you only start repaying your student loans after you graduate and start earning over £21,000.
You may also be eligible for a tax-free Bursary by the National College for Teaching and Leadership, depending on the subject you are training to teach and the classification of your first degree.

Many schools involved in School Direct are seeking to fill a vacant post at the end of the course, though there is no guarantee of employment.
During your training there will be ample opportunities for engagement with relevant local employment organisations including schools and teacher recruitment agencies through on campus events.
You will be encouraged to join the relevant professional association for your subject or area of study, providing the opportunity to engage with wider networks of teachers and others interested in your chosen area.
You will also be able to network with recent alumni and local professional communities.
Most of our students go on to work in schools and colleges, locally and nationally, in the state or independent sectors.
Teaching provides a variety of career pathways leading to specialist roles in schools and colleges ranging from pastoral care and subject leadership right through to school leadership positions.
Having gained experience in teaching, a number of graduates move into associated professions such as Educational Psychology, consultancy, and roles in the education service sector outside of schools.
International applicants are required to demonstrate equivalent qualifications to the standard requirements for entry when applying for courses at LJMU.
Students must also demonstrate a proficiency in communicating through English, for example via an IELTS tests or equivalent.
