As a deck officer to engineering officer, there are many exciting career opportunities in the Merchant Navy. It’s a career which has opportunities at sea and ashore. Merchant Ships carry 80% of the world trade (over 90% of UK trade) and are a vital part of the world economy. New technologies are continually being introduced to ships and the industry needs the right calibre of officers to run these ships.
To become a merchant navy officer in the UK you to embark upon the right education and training course to achieve both professional seafaring certification and educational qualifications. This will include time at sea on merchant navy vessels and in specialist colleges and universities in the UK.
For UK residents, the programmes are usually fully sponsored by shipping organisations, with Seatime, course fees paid, and living costs and other allowances provided.
Once qualified you could work aboard any type of ship, anywhere in the world, from a small coastal vessel to a large cruise ship, roll-on roll-off ferry, container ship, bulk carrier, offshore support vessel, tanker, or Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessel (which supports the Royal Navy at sea).
Personnel from shipping companies’ training and recruitment staff will be available to provide advice and discuss career opportunities. LJMU staff will be also be available to offer advice relevant to studies whilst existing students will share their experience. Demonstrations on our full mission bridge and engine room simulators will be available to show case on the job experience for those who are interested.
