ART LABS offers contemporary and innovative approaches to professional research, art practice and advanced study.
Rooted in the history and radical mission of the Liverpool Mechanics’ School of Arts (1825) and the city of Liverpool’s industrial legacy, the Institute has emerged as a pioneer of creativity and innovation, grounded in a deep commitment to inclusion and diversity - values that both shaped its history and foreground its future-facing mission.
Every year, researchers from ART LABS publish over 50 publications. Staff create publications within a number of key disciplines, including: contemporary art, 3D digital art, the uses of art and cultural enrichment, exhibitions and curatorship, as well as design discourse and practice.
Current CPMH Co-Director, Professor Nicholas J White (LJMU) and former CPMH Co-Director, Professor Andrew Popp (Copenhagen Business School) are the series editors of the Liverpool University Press book series, Studies in Port and Maritime History.
LJMU’s CPMH members have contributed to or curated several exhibitions and are currently involved in exciting new and inter-disciplinary projects, including one centred on the Battle of the Atlantic 80th Anniversary Celebrations.
