Intern to Work

Supported Internships project

The Intern to Work – Supported Internships project was funded by the LJMU Diversity and Inclusion Team in 2023-2024.

It allowed for a pilot programme of 5 supported interns recruited through a partnership with Liverpool City Council.

This project was spearheaded by Paula McNulty, Student Experience Manager, Arts Professional and Social Studies and it won the Liverpool City Council's Best Partnership Working Award 2024.

LJMU has been incredible in supporting the Supported Internship pilot programme. Nothing has been a barrier, the placements LJMU found for interns matched their skills and experience within their chosen fields.

The LJMU team has worked with the college, council and job coach to support the interns in an inclusive, nurturing environment from day one. Thanks to Paula and the team for being brilliant partners and advocates for the Supported Internship Pilot Programme.

How the project came about

What is a Supported Internship?

How can departments get involved?

Steps towards hosting a supported intern

  1. Step one

    Draft a job description

Departments are asked to create a brief job description outlining key tasks and responsibilities.

    Please note:
This is not an exhaustive list but a guide to help interns understand whether the role aligns with their interests, which aids in managing expectations when they start the job.

  2. Step two

    Submit role to job coaches

The job description will be shared with job coaches, who will assess and recommend suitable candidates for the placement.

  3. Step three

    Attend mini open day

The Diversity and Inclusion Team will organise an on-campus Open Day for the learners and job coaches. This visit includes:

    • A tour of the workspace
    • Familiarisation with building access points, restrooms, water stations, and lunch areas
    • A skills workshop to highlight transferable skills across roles

This supports a smoother transition and builds confidence before the internship begins.

  4. Step four

    Receive intern profiles

Once pairings are confirmed, departments will receive intern profiles from job coaches to better understand the individual’s needs and discuss any reasonable adjustments required.

  5. Step five

    Agree on start date

Departments and interns will agree on a start date. Where possible, we aim for all interns to begin within the same week for consistency and support.

  6. Step six

Access set-up and risk assessment forms

The Diversity and Inclusion Team will complete and submit the New Contingent Worker Approval Form to set up LJMU access (ID card, email account, etc.). The Risk Assessment forms will be completed with the job coaches.

  7. Step seven

    Onboarding and induction

Interns will begin their first day with an onboarding session covering:

    • LJMU access card collection
    • logging into LJMU systems
    • completing key mandatory training modules

After onboarding, interns will begin their placements.
