LJMU recognised for public engagement work (2026)

JMU has been recognised for its public engagement activities with a national quality mark. The university has been awarded the Bronze Engage Watermark in Spring 2026 by the National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE), highlighting its strong foundations for public engagement and its commitment to deepening this work across the institution.

Professor Zoe Knowles from the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences was Academic Lead for the application alongside Professional services Colleague Gemma Reed. This national quality mark acknowledges universities that have embedded meaningful engagement into their strategic priorities and are actively investing in long-term improvement.

The assessment highlighted deep local partnerships, authentic leadership and growing momentum through initiatives such as LJMU Engage and the public engagement officer role. Communities, staff and students were placed at the heart of LJMU’s impact, with clear potential to scale this work further through joined-up structures and clearer access routes.

NCCPE judged that a thoughtful and well-designed action plan provided strategic clarity and ambition for the next phase of development.

Winner of the Vice-Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Knowledge Exchange (2025)

In December 2025, Dr Richie Kirwan won the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Knowledge Exchange in recognition of his work leading an international partnership between Liverpool John Moores University and the Simply Sport Foundation in India.

The collaboration has focused on improving education around female athlete health, nutrition, and menstrual health through the co-development of evidence-based educational resources, expert webinars, and research opportunities.

The partnership also led to the development of the Simply Periods Handbook, produced in collaboration with LJMU and distributed internationally through the Badminton World Federation.

The collaboration continues to create opportunities for international research, student engagement, and knowledge exchange, while supporting the health and wellbeing of female athletes and coaches in India.
