Prior to joining the Institute he worked as a senior research manager for a private sector social policy research company, and before this he worked as a freelance research consultant while completing an ESRC CASE Studentship PhD scholarship at Liverpool University’s Geography Department.
He has thirteen years applied social and urban policy research experience, and is skilled in both qualitative and quantitative research methods. These skills include case studies, semi-structured and structured questionnaire design, interviewing and analysis; designing and analysing online questionnaires; focus groups; and secondary data collection and analysis.
Gerwyn has led research projects for multi-disciplinary teams and has been a co-investigator for a wide ranging client base, including: Central Government Departments, Local Government, the European Commission, ESPON, the Economic and Social Research Council and the Third Sector.
Between 2011 and 2014 he was a co-investigator on an ESRC funded research programme looking at the impact of recession and austerity on the cities of Liverpool and Bristol, and how this has affected households, local authorities and key local economy stakeholders, such as the voluntary and community sector. In 2013 and 2014 he was a co-investigator on a national research programme looking at the work and impact of faith sector organisations in the fields of social justice and welfare, as part of the Together for the Common Good programme. Gerwyn has recently completed research for Liverpool Council for Voluntary Services (LCVS) measuring the economic and social impact of the voluntary sector across the Liverpool City Region.
