I am a Reader in Education and Global Learning, Joint Programme Leader for MA Education and Social Justice and BA Education Studies in the School of Education, LJMU. I teach across the subject area of Education and Early Childhood Studies and work with students at undergraduate, post-graduate, professional doctorate (EdD) and PhD levels. My teaching and research interests draw on my academic and professional work in education, social policy and international development in the UK, Ireland, Tanzania, Bangladesh, India, Nepal and The Gambia. My passion for education and learning stems from early work in community arts and primary teaching and subsequent work as an educator in international and multidisciplinary contexts.
I have undertaken a wide range of funded research and evaluation projects. Recent research includes ‘Barriers to participation in education’ with The World Bank/The Gambian Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education; ‘A review of the International Climate Champions Programme’ with British Council, India; ‘Girls into Physics Action Research’ with The Institute of Physics and ‘Technology Justice: Global Learning in formal education systems in the UK, Poland, Cyprus and Italy’ with the international NGO, Practical Action.
My research and teaching is focussed on UN Sustainable Development Goal 4.7 (SDG 4 Quality Education) that I interpret as a call for all educators and critical education researchers to respond to uncertain times we live in and build transformative competencies, to understand and to contribute positively to a changing world.
