Dr Susan Kay-Flowers

Biography

My research interest is participatory research with young people. I am interested in giving 'voice' to children’s experiences with a particular focus on children and young people’s relationships. Using innovative, participatory research methods, my doctoral research focussed on young adults’ childhood experiences of separation and divorce providing new insights into the issues surrounding parental separation or divorce from the unique perspectives and retrospectives of young adults. The findings, published in my recent book - Kay-Flowers, S. (2019) 'Childhood Experiences of Separation and Divorce; Reflections from Young Adults', Policy Press, Bristol - informed the development of a new framework for understanding children’s accommodation of parental separation (Available at: https://policy.bristoluniversitypress.co.uk/asset/7308/kay-flowers-appendix-six-in-colour.pdf) which can be used by practitioners to support their work with children and families. My future research will involve professional discussions with practitioners about how the framework can be used to support children, young people and parents experiencing parental separation.

This work builds on my earlier research in this area and previous work as a Family Court Advisor in the Family Courts and as an Advocate for Looked After Children. I have also worked in the Probation Service and am a Registered Social Worker.

I have worked as a Senior Lecturer in Education and Early Childhood Studies at Liverpool John Moores University since 2012, teaching across the Education and Early Childhood Studies undergraduate programmes. I am Programme Leader for the MA Education, Globalisation and Social Change programme, teaching on two of the modules and supervising Masters dissertations. I also supervise doctoral level students. If you are considering doing a PhD in one the above-mentioned areas, please contact me directly via email (S.J.Kay-Flowers@ljmu.ac.uk).

I have extensive international experience. Current projects involve collaborative research work with academic colleagues in Romanian and Nepali universities. These partnerships are long standing and have involved many knowledge exchange visits for staff and work based learning experiences for students. Findings from recent collaborative research in the area of sex and relationship education with Dr Cristina Faludi at Babes-Bolyai University have been presented at international conferences, used to inform policy development and a Special Issue of Social Work Review, (Revista de Asistenta Sociala) on Sexuality.

As Co-Ordinator of an Erasmus Intensive Programme (IP) on ‘Globalisation, Conflict and Learning Societies’ (Grant agreement reference number: 2013/IP/19/LIVERPO02-GLS), I led and delivered cross national learning experiences for staff and students from universities from four different countries. Roskilde University, Denmark, University of Eastern Finland, Tallinn University, Estonia and LJMU were partners in this programme and remain collaborative partners. I have been involved in creating and extending international experiences for students and staff through curriculum developments such as the MA programme and remain committed to this area of work.
