Dr Michaela Gkantou

School of Civil Engineering and Built Environment

Dr Michaela Gkantou is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Civil Engineering and Built Environment at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) which she joined in 2018.

She obtained a 5-year diploma in Civil Engineering (8.51/10 distinction) at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece in 2012, an MSc in the Design of Steel Structures (110/110 cum laude) at the University of Naples Federico II, Italy in 2013, and a PhD on the nonlinear response of high strength steel structures at the University of Birmingham, UK, in 2017.

She is the module leader of undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the field of Structural Engineering, the 3rd year level leader in Civil Engineering LJMU and the link tutor for HND civil engineering programmes in ICBT, Sri Lanka.

She is a Chartered Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (CEng MICE) and member of the ICE Merseyside Branch Committee, a Fellow of Higher Education Academy (FHEA), a member of Women’s Engineering Society (WES), a member of Hellenic Society for Steel Structures Research (EEME), a Member of Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE), a Management Committee Member of COST Action CA 20109 and a STEM Ambassador. She is also an EPSRC Associate College Member and a member of the British Standard Committee: CB/203 - Design & execution of steel structures.

She has published 26 peer-reviewed journal articles and 35+ conference publications and is reviewer in 20 scientific journals. Her main research interests are: sustainable structural materials and design procedures; experimental structural testing; finite element modelling; aluminium, high strength steel, stainless steel and composite structures.

Dr Gkantou is accepting candidates for PhD in the field of Structural Engineering.
