Dr Hiren Kotadia

School of Engineering

Dr Hiren Kotadia joined Liverpool John Moores University in September 2022 from the University of Warwick, UK, where he continues to have an honorary visiting research position. Hiren was educated in India where he obtained his first degree from M. S. University, Baroda and his MMet from the University of Sheffield and PhD from Brunel University London. He joined King’s College London (from 2009 to 2012) as postdoctoral researcher and worked for Constellium (manufacturer of aluminium) (from 2012 to 2015) as a research scientist. In 2015, Hiren joined WMG, University of Warwick, where he was promoted to senior research fellow and became associate professor.

Hiren has been highly active in light alloys and solidification processes (Casting, Welding, Soldering and Additive Manufacturing) for over 10 years with an aim to reduce CO2 emissions through light weighting, microstructure design, waste management and recycling. He has served as lead expert of lightweight strategy for the HMV Catapult at WMG and ‘near-net shape’ Catapult forum.

Research interests

Hiren research focus is solidification, phase transformation and new alloy development by using advanced research tools, including ex-situ and in-situ.
(1) Aluminium alloys for Additive manufacturing (Alloy design – Processing – Microstructure – Properties)
(2) Optimising advanced laser welding processes for joining light alloys in multi-material structures (e.g. steel to aluminium) and texturing for high friction and corrosion applications
(3) Microstructure – Corrosion relationships for metallic material
(4) High Temperature Microelectronics for automotive, oil and gas industry
