I am the Head of Continuing Professional Development, Commercial Activity and Enterprise for the Faculty of Health Liverpool John Moores University. Supporting talent expansion and retention in our region is a key part of the University’s mission. LJMU’s Faculty of Health is uniquely positioned to help organisations with this, by providing both accredited and non-accredited Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programmes, bespoke courses and research, along with other enterprise activities or collaborations in our specialist disciplines of Public Health, Allied Health and Psychology.
My role is a cross Faculty role, which incorporates the Schools of Nursing and Allied Health, Psychology and The Public Health Institute. As a member of the Faculty Management Team, I provide high level support to the Faculty in the delivery of it's strategy for commercialisation and external engagement, and responsibility for the growth in the Faculty's CPD and enterprise income. Developing and maintaining stakeholder relationships is key to the success of this role
I qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1988 working within the medical care field, specialising in areas of haematology, pharmacology and respiratory medicine. I spent 6 years as a Ward Manager, undertaking duties as acting Clinical Manager, and in 2001 I was appointed as a Practice Education Facilitator, which inspired me to pursue a career in education at LJMU.
I commenced my career at LJMU in 2003 as a Senior Lecturer until 2021, when I commenced my current post.
I am currently studying for my MPhil part time. I am undertaking a qualitative research study entitled "A longitudinal exploration of adolescents, and their parents, when living with congenital heart disease- a qualitative study". Adolescents are young people who are developing into an adult, between the ages of 10-19 years. This transition is a time of change emotionally and physically, including identity seeking, commencing secondary school, beginning puberty, sexual relationships with others, and exploration of activities that may impact on their health, such as smoking and drinking. This period of time is made more challenging if the adolescent is a CHD patient due to their existing health condition.
It is important to understand what it feels like to be an adolescent with ACHD, so they, and their parents/guardians, can be supported during the period of adolescence.
