Dr Jason McIntyre

School of Psychology

I am a Lecturer in Psychology with research interests in mental health, social psychology, and health inequalities. I am particularly interested in understanding the role of social groups in the development and maintenance of mental health symptoms. Specifically, I study whether the extent to which people identify with different social groups (e.g., friendship groups or hobby groups) and categories (gender or sexuality) affects their mental health. This includes looking at people’s psychological fusion with social groups, the extent of people’s social networks, the quality of their social interactions, and loneliness. I am also interested in the psychological mechanisms by which groups influence people’s mental health and the impact of social identification on the health of people from minority groups.
