RESEARCH INTERESTS
I am Senior Lecturer in Analytical Chemistry within the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences. The Fielding group uses electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy to solve biological and material science problems concerning structure and transient intermediates. EPR is analogous to nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and measures unpaired electrons. EPR is particularly useful for studying metal complexes and organic radicals. The applications are broad, ranging from chemistry/pharmacy, materials science to sports science. The Fielding group’s research is wide-ranging and problem driven.

Plastic Waste
We have recently successfully obtained a Leverhulme Fellowship (2019-2020) and a RSC Research Enablement Grant (2021-2022) for a project titled: “Understanding the radical source of the degradation of plastic waste”. The project aims to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the radical mechanism of action involved in the degradation of common plastic waste materials. We have done several media appearances on this subject and are happy to do more.

Drug Interactions
A prime focus is using EPR and other spectroscopic techniques to measure drug interactions. A recent example can be found is: Fielding, A.J.* et al. Chemistry – A European Journal 2017, 23, 6811-6828

Surface Interactions
Excitingly, we have developed a new synthetic strategy that uses spin labels to link biofunctional groups to surfaces (Fielding, A.J.* et al., A Bifunctional Spin Label for Ligand Recognition on Surfaces, Angewandte Chemie - International Edition 2017, 56, 9449-9453).

Structural Biology
We apply the latest EPR techniques to structural, mechanistic and kinetic questions concerning flavins, cytochromes, kinases and phosphatases. A good example of our work using double electron electron resonance (DEER): Fielding, A.J. et al., Structure 2016, 24, 2115–2126.

Materials Science
We have a number of collaborations concerning novel materials. We have recently worked on the surface chemistry of MoS2 using EPR (Fielding, A.J.* et al., Chemistry of Materials 2017, 29, 5886-5895).

Other expertise includes UV-vis stopped flow and rapid freeze-quench.

In all endeavours, we welcome collaborative partners both nationally and abroad. Phone calls always welcome.

Industrial EPR sample running is possible. LJMU has a Bruker EMX EPR instrument.

PhD Students
Currently, seven students have gained their PhD under my supervision. All have gone on to careers in either academia or industry. New applications are always welcome.

Teaching
Analytical and physical chemistry. Topics include: NMR, EPR, AAS, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, IR, UV-vis, electrochemistry, Group Theory and transition metal spectroscopy.
