Deborah studies part-time alongside her long standing career -working on and managing physical activity programmes, commissioned by Public Health Wigan. Since her 2014 start date, Deborah has learned qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and conducted these professionally with children and young people across the Wigan Borough. From the first study in her PhD, Deborah has published a paper and presented orally to an International conference. Now back from maternity leave and in the midst of analysing data, Deborah hopes for similar success for studies 2-4.

PhD project title: Accelerometer wear compliance in children and young people

Supervisors: Dr Lee Graves, Professor Zoe Knowles, Professor Stuart Fairclough

Improving compliance to physical activity monitoring is critical for obtaining valid, comparable data free from inconsistencies that occur during data reduction. This PhD uses formative and exploratory research to investigate children (8-11 years) and young people’s (12-15 years) views on strategies to promote habitual wear of hip (ActiGraph) and wrist-worn (GENEActiv) accelerometers. These findings will generate a participant informed accelerometer wear-time protocol. Thus, this PhD will enhance the quality of free-living physical activity monitoring data in future research, reducing the time and cost burden associated with low wear compliance.
