Professor Catherine Cole  is the Associate Dean Research for APSS and Professor of Creative Writing in the Screen School. She is the postgraduate Ombudsperson for the Faculty. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts. Her degrees include, PhD, MA, BA, Grad Dip Ed, Associate Dip in Writing and Editing. She has published 9 books which include academic monographs, non-fiction and fiction, and also journal articles, reviews and comment. Her research interests are varied and have included feminism and crime fiction, fashion in fiction, French colonialism in Vietnam, memory studies, the short story and novel. Her most recent work has been on memory and migration with further research currently underway on why certain countries have a very specific kind of cultural allure. 

Catherine has been a professor for 14 years in Australia and the UK. She was a member of the Australian Research Council’s Professorial panel on Excellence in Research for the Humanities and Creative Arts,  and has been a reader/reviewer for the ARC and the Literature Board of the Australia Council. She has extensive experience of university governance as a former Deputy Dean, Discipline Head, member of Academic Boards, university committees and reviews. She has wide knowledge of international postgraduate research and policy and has supervised to completion over 30 PhD students in Australia and the UK. 

Catherine is an Honorary Professorial Fellow at the University of Wollongong in Australia and has been a visiting fellow at the UK university of East Anglia, Sun Yat-Sen University In Guangzhou, China as well as a literary fellow in Hanoi, Vietnam, Paris, France and in various universities and writers centres in Australia. She has reviewed university programs and investigated complaints in a range of countries - prior to her career as an academic, was a human rights and equality advocate for Australian government and the trade union movement. Her research funding has included international grants from Global Challenges, Australia Council, Australia - China Foundation, Asialink, Colombo Plan and the Copyright Agency. She has judged some of Australia’s leading literary awards and her work also has been shortlisted in a number of these including the NSW Premiers Literary Awards.
