Course aim
You will develop the essential knowledge and skills for infection control and learn how to innovatively apply this knowledge in your professional practice.
Course content
The programme is designed to give you a contemporary perspective on the principles and policies relating to infection control plus the ability to apply these in professional practice.
You will be empowered to improve the management of infection control issues in your area of work. You will also study recent advances and research activity in this field.
You will examine a range of factors affecting the management of infections, including:
- ethical and legal issues
- aspects of multidisciplinary care
- the impact of political, social, environmental and economic influences for management of infections taking account of the changing trends of infections
Teaching and learning
The course consists of a single module 6005HEAL, Infection Control for Healthcare.
The course spans 8 days, with each day consisting of:
- keynote lectures
- workshops based on reflective analysis of clinical practice
You will be required to complete 8 full days of academic study at LJMU.

Extra Requirements
This course is aimed at first level nurses, midwives or other professionally qualified staff, normally working in a local healthcare organisation.
You should be:
- employed in a position in which infection control is relevant to your day-to-day activities
- have at least a Diploma in Higher Education in Nursing, a diploma in a profession allied to medicine or a diploma obtained as a part of post registration qualification
- If you do not have a diploma, you will be considered individually on the basis of your experience and professional development
How to apply
To apply for this programme, you are required to complete an LJMU CPD application form. You will need to provide details of your qualifications and curent employment.
Assessment
You will be assessed via a 4,500 word learning agreement on a situational analysis (with action plan) for improving an infection control issue within your workplace.
CPD award
This Continuing Professional Development module can be studied within the BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care Development award framework or as a single CPD.
