Course aim

The key aim of this programme is to encourage you to foster an ethos of continuing professional development throughout your career. This CPD course is aligned to the new CIPD professional map and is designed to give you the related knowledge and behaviours required to succeed in this fascinating career.

Completing the People Management and Practice CPD programme at Liverpool John Moores University will boost your human resources career progression. Furthermore, you will be eligible for Associate Membership of the CIPD.

Course content

This programme has been designed specifically for people who work full-time, with classes running on Wednesday evenings starting in September. You will also have the option to attend additional networking sessions with undergraduate and postgraduate MA Strategic People Management and Practice students.

The following modules make up the programme:

1. People Practice and Professional Behaviours

The module aims to provide an understanding of the core professional elements of human resources, including related knowledge and behaviours. The module provides a foundation of knowledge and skills in readiness for professional application. Workshops incorporate lectures, group discussions and practical formative assessment exercises.

2. Effective People Management at Work

The module aims to enhance the understanding of contemporary people practices to better support working lives ranging from creating a conducive inclusive working environment, developing talent, and understanding the factors that influence reward and its impact. It also examines role of supporting line managers to carry out people practices and explore contemporary human resource practices.

Teaching and learning

Classes are delivered on Wednesday evenings to fit around your work schedule with online support available.

We adopt an active blended learning approach, meaning you will experience a combination of face-to-face and online learning during your time at LJMU. This enables you to experience a rich and diverse learning experience and engage fully with your studies. Our approach ensures that you can easily access support from your personal tutor, either by meeting them on-campus or via a video call to suit your needs.

Teaching

Teaching focuses on real people-management situations, presentations and case studies to enhance your practical as well as your academic skills. Private study is an important part of your learning and should account for approximately half of your weekly schedule.

Work-related Learning

This highly practical programme is an ideal opportunity to update your professional HR skills and knowledge, and build up a workplace portfolio that you can use to apply for CIPD Associate membership. This will significantly enhance your chances of promotion and future career prospects.

    We will also consider applications from those with relevant work experience who can demonstrate their ability to cope on the programme.

Assessment

We understand that each student performs differently depending on the way they are assessed, which is why we use a combination of assessment methods. These include:

  • a seen case study exam
  • class tests and quizzes
  • summaries of e-discussions
  • group and individual presentations
  • written work such as management reports
  • practical assessments
  • records of learning

Your tutors will aim to provide assessment feedback within three weeks, and will happily discuss it with you in class or one-to-one. This is particularly important as it gives you a chance to identify your strengths as well as the areas that may need further attention. We also offer study support classes to help you prepare for assessments.

 

CPD award

This course is approved by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and has been developed to reflect its Intermediate Standard Level. If you complete the programme successfully, you will become an Associate Member.

We have excellent links with the CIPD, both nationally and locally, which enable us to maintain our high standards of teaching, learning and assessment.

The University may make changes to a programme of study or module where such changes are deemed to be beneficial to students, are minor in nature and unlikely to impact negatively upon students or become necessary due to circumstances beyond the control of the University.
