Dr Newson, Prof Doc; C.Psychol; FHEA; HCPC Registered Practitioner Psychologist.
Reader in Applied Health Psychology
Co-Programme Director Professional Doctorate in Health Psychology (Since 2023)
International Society of Behavioral Medicine, Organizational Liaison Chair

Dr Newson has varied experience as a Chartered Psychologist and HCPC Registered Practitioner Psychologist (Health). She is a proud innovator of applied health psychology and has experience across the full spectrum of application within academia and healthcare practice.

Dr Newson has focused her academic career on engaged scholarship, applying knowledge exchange, applied research and creating change in real-world healthcare and community environments to benefit users. Engaged impact is achieved through her applied research to inform policy and strategy developments worldwide (instrumental impact); the promotion and development of health psychology and behavioural medicine (capacity building impact); and through conceptual impact, changing ways of thinking about healthcare practices, creating impact through initiating knowledge and connecting professions together through (network and creativity impact).

Health Psychology is a niche field with approximately ~600 HCPC Registered Health Psychologists in the UK. Globally, there are limited avenues for professional training in this discipline. However, Dr. Newson is actively involved in enhancing the skill set of professionals and advocating for the advancement of health psychology worldwide. Notably, Dr. Newson has spearheaded initiatives such as establishing pivotal Health Psychologist roles within healthcare and community services, advocating for the cultivation of new talent through professional development programs, and fervently promoting the global recognition of health psychology as a distinguished profession.

Recognised for her expertise and global involvement, nominated by the UK Society for Behavioural Medicine, in July 2023 Dr Newson was voted from a worldwide election to Chair of the Organisational Committee for the International Society of Behavioral Medicine representing 27 countries. This position spearheads information exchange with relevant international health-related scientific organisations seeking to promote networking and capacity building across behavioural medicine. For example, Dr Newson is supporting the initiation of a Behavioural Medicine Community of Practice in The United Emirates for the first time, bringing academics and practitioners from across various disciplines to share knowledge and build capacity in behavioural medicine.

Dr Newson's expertise influences health prevention (overlapping with public health) and is applied directly to the management of long-term conditions. Her previous experience within the NHS, as a clinical practitioner; within Public Health commissioning & management and as an applied researcher through academic-health collaborations, helps her to bridge the 'knowledge-language gap’ and add value between the ambitions and needs of academia and those working within healthcare. In recognition of her varied experience, in July 2023, Dr Newson was invited to take the position of Health Psychologist representative on the National Practice Board of The BPS.

Dr Newson has applied research activity with partners in Australia, Singapore, Morocco and Brazil, for which her contribution seeks to 1) ensure the research implementation benefits the service users themselves and 2) the research evidence seeks to change real-world healthcare and community practice.

Dr Newson, is the Co-Programme Director of the Professional Doctorate in Health Psychology at LJMU (2023 onwards) and previously Programme Leader for MSc Health Psychology (2015 -2023), for which both are accredited by the British Psychological Society (Stage 1 professional training), and the Prof Doc is recognised for HCPC registration. LJMU is one of only six UK universities that provides a continuous learning opportunity through Levels 4-8, offering the Professional Doctorate in Health Psychology (Stage 2 accreditation) and inspiring students to develop careers as Chartered Health Psychologists and HCPC Registered Practitioner Psychologists. Dr Newson, is a supervisor to MSc, Trainee Health Psychologists and PhD candidates. She is a BPS RAPPS approved supervisor and national assessor.
