Biography

Dr Lutfun Nahar joined the Faculty of Science, LJMU, as an Honorary Lecturer in May 2013. She is an active member of the Medicinal Chemistry and Natural Products Research Group within the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences. Prior to this current position, she worked as a Senior Lecturer in Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, and coordinated the Drug Discovery and Design Research Division within the Pharmacy Research Group. She was also the ERASMUS coordinator at UoW (2008-2011).

Previously, Dr Nahar also had held a number of other academic/research positions, e.g., Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the Leicester School of Pharmacy, De Montfort University, Lecturer in Medicinal Chemistry at the Robert Gordon University, Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Ulster, Visiting Professor at the Tripoli University, Research Scientist at the Rowett Research Institute, MRC Fellowship at the Robert Gordon University and Post-doctoral Fellowship at the University of Aberdeen.

Dr Nahar graduated with a Chemistry (Hons) degree from the University of Exeter and obtained my PhD in Synthetic Organic Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Aberdeen. She is a well-trained organic medicinal and natural products chemist, with years of experience in classical and modern organic synthesis as well as various chromatographic separation and purification e.g., high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and spectroscopic identification techniques, e.g. nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared (IR), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) and mass spectrometry (MS). To date, she has published 350 peer-reviewed scientific papers, invited reviews, abstracts, books and book chapters in the area of Synthetic Organic Medicinal and Natural Products Chemistry. Total Google Scholar citations: 8430, h- index: 43 and i10-index: 186. ResearchGate score: 43.31.

Her current research interests include: application of organic synthetic methodologies in different areas of chemistry; Design and synthesis of novel anticancer, antimalarial, antibacterial and antioxidant agents; Design and synthesis of 'nanoparticles' and 'molecular umbrellas' for drug delivery and other application; Synthesis of biologically active macrocyclic polyamines, steroid monomers and dimers; Synthesis of bioactive natural products and pharmaceutically important small molecules; Isolation and structure determination of bioactive phytochemicals and structure activity relationships (SAR) of bioactive compounds.

Dr Nahar, together with Prof Satya Sarker, authored the popular textbook, ‘Chemistry for Pharmacy Students: General, Organic and Natural Products Chemistry’, published by John Wiley & Sons in 2007, and this book was translated in Portuguese (2009), Japanese (2012) and Greek (2015). Dr Nahar & Prof Sarker have Just submitted the second edition of the Chemistry textbook which will be published this year. Dr Nahar and Prof Sarker edited the 3rd edition of the book, ‘Natural Products Isolation’, published by Humana Press/Springer-Verlag in 2012. They also wrote the book, 'Steroid Dimers: Chemistry and Applications in Drug Design and Deliver', published by John Wiley and Sons in 2012, which is the first and only book published on steroid dimers. Dr Nahar and Prof Sarker also edited a brand-new book, Computational Phytochemistry (published April 2018), which is the first book in that emerging area of research.

Dr Nahar was the Guest Editor for the special issue of Advances in Pharmacological Sciences on ‘Anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive and antipyretic activities of medicinal plants and their constituents’ (2012), the special issue of Medicines on ‘Essential Oils: Chemistry and Bioactivity’ (2015-16) and the special issue of Evidence Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine on ‘Pain Management and Wound Care with Traditional Medicine’ (2016-17).

Dr Nahar is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since 2009 and a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry since 2003. She has been the moderator of the well-established on-line discussion group in natural products research, NatProDis. Her scientific profile has been published in every edition of the Marquis "Who’s Who in the World" since 2009 and "Who's Who in Science and Engineering" since 2010.
