Placements allow students to develop their skills and knowledge within the context of the workplace and combine theoretical aspects of the course by experiencing the professional practice of pharmacy alongside experienced pharmacists, other healthcare professionals and other healthcare students. Placements also allows students to meet the learning objectives set out by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
Through these experiences, students will have the opportunity to develop their clinical, decision-making and communication skills, within a selection of practice environments relating to the programmes learning outcomes. In addition, students will have the opportunity to reflect on their own personal and professional development. Placements support students in developing and demonstrating knowledge and competency and will focus on Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs).
We offer placements in all of the following settings:
- Simulation (these are placements that happen in our LJMU Simulation Placement Suites on Campus and virtually and allow students to prepare for their external placements in a realistic and safe learning environment)
- Community Pharmacies
- Hospitals
- Primary Care trusts (GP Practices, Health centres)
- Specialist Areas (HMP Prisons, Mental Health Charities, Specialist Hospitals, etcetera)
Placement arrangements are supported by the Science Placement Learning Support Unit (Science PLSU) who lead the day to day operational and implementation of professional placement experiences within the MPharm programme.

We enjoy working in partnership with our placement providers to train the workforce of the future. Our placement supervisors have enormous clinical and professional experience, from which our students are privileged to learn and develop. To enable everybody involved in the learning process to be supported and to develop in their roles, we offer pre-placement training to providers, and to students, formal aspects are outlined below. Additionally sector-specific leads from LJMU and the Science PLSU team will meet providers to prepare for placements and answer any questions.
Pharmacy Educational Supervisor Training Programme
The E-learning programme aims to provide placement supervisors with the knowledge and skills needed in practice or educational supervision roles. It will enable placement supervisors to gain confidence and satisfaction from their supervision activities, improve the training experiences of trainees and enhance learners’ contributions to the development of a highly skilled pharmacy workforce.
This programme currently includes 2 modules, developed for those in the pharmacy sector who are involved in the training of others, including supervising shadowing experiences, or undertaking official educational supervisor roles. The modules include interactive activities and case studies to guide you through the content.
