New film celebrates 200 years of LJMU in 90 seconds

Watch the film and celebrate this bicentenary year with LJMU.

As LJMU marks 200 years of history in 2023, a new 90 second film – LJMU 200 - celebrates the roots of the institution founded in 1823 and how it has become the modern university that it is today.

Bringing accessible education to the working classes to changing the health of the nation for the better, the quick-fire film introduces some of the landmark LJMU moments of the last two centuries.

The film even has a nod to Eurovision, as Liverpool, only a matter of days ago, became the official host city for the 2023 competition.

LJMU alumni-founded company behind film creative

It has been devised and created by LJMU's Corporate Communications team with Mocha, a Liverpool-based film company founded and run by LJMU alumni.

Mocha’s Managing Director Phil Halpin and his team have collaborated with LJMU since their inception, following their studies at the university, producing high-quality, creative corporate films.

Phil said: “As residents of Liverpool, we’ve witnessed the city’s journey since the turn of the 21st century. And as Mocha, a company that was born out of the Media Professional Studies undergraduate programme at LJMU, we’ve had the privilege of documenting this journey and the impact that the university has had on the city. It’s been 24 years since we founded Mocha, and it’s safe to say that the university, city, and our business has changed a lot in that time. That’s why we were delighted to receive the brief for LJMU’s bicentenary celebration.

“We’re honoured to be working with LJMU on this hugely significant milestone and to be the company that they chose to help tell their story. By creating a campaign that positions LJMU as a catalyst for positive social change, we’re helping reposition the university brand in a way that’s relevant, inspiring, and meaningful. And as residents of Liverpool, we couldn’t be more proud to be part of this celebration of LJMU’s 200 years of always being ahead of its time.”

A further series of short films will be developed throughout the year.

This bicentenary year

There will be opportunities throughout the year for staff, students and the wider LJMU community to get involved in celebrations. From high profile Roscoe lectures and international academic conferences to campus-wide exhibitions, student-driven projects and alumni homecomings. Dedicated bicentenary webpages have further information.

LJMU is also curating 200 online profiles – featuring some familiar faces from the film – that will tell the stories of its people from the past, the present and those shaping and changing the future for the better. These will also be shared over the next 12 months.

Staff encouraged to share the film throughout 2023

LJMU staff can download the film to share in presentations and at conferences or events throughout the year.

The video, along with a range of branded templates and assets can be downloaded by members of staff through the brand and design hub. There's also a set of guidelines to follow when creating and sharing materials.
