Preparing for your careers meeting and what to expect

We know many students feel overwhelmed when thinking about careers and the future however our  friendly and professionally-trained team are here to support you and here to listen.  You don’t need a fully-formed career plan to come and see us – in fact our ‘Getting Started’ and ‘I don’t know what to do’ are very common themes of our meetings.

We recommend you explore our online resources to help you before coming to a CV, application or interview preparation session so you have read some general guidance, we can then spend the time in our meetings talking about specific jobs, applications and interviews with you.

These are a great starting point, and will ensure you get the most out of your careers meeting.

You can also test your CV on CV360 prior to your meeting to see how it compares against your peers.  This is a helpful and ensures we can focus on enhancing your CV content over basic grammar, spelling and formatting advice.

Launch CV360

Tell us what is most important to you at the start of the careers meeting so we can help you prioritise and plan.  Your adviser will discuss with you what is possible to cover in this careers meeting today and may advise you to book another session if you want to talk through many things.

During the meeting we can discuss a range of different things and explore different careers thinking.  No question is too small or silly so please ask us anything. Some typical careers meetings are around talking about your skills, your strengths, what you like doing and your values which can help you discover jobs you may be suited to.  We can also help you know where to find jobs and volunteering in different sectors, to create a job search strategy or look at postgraduate options. One of the most common questions is ‘how do I get work experience?’ and we can talk you through opportunities including LJMU internships and joining LJMU’s internal recruitment agency Unitemps.  Helping you succeed in being shortlisted for a job, and helping you through interviews, assessment centres and online testing is also something we help with, we can talk you through what to expect during a typical recruitment process and top tips to get you hired.

At the end of the meeting we’ll agree a number of actions or achievable goals – this might be doing some more research around a theme, attending a careers workshop or making a job application!

Keep your actions or goals somewhere you can see them!  You don’t need to do them all straight away but set yourself a plan and a deadline date (as you would preparing for an assignment).

Once you have completed these you can book back in and meet with us again – you have unlimited meetings however we do want to see some work in- between meetings!  All our staff are trained to advise all students however we understand you might want to follow up and re-book with the same advisor which you can do by emailing and we’ll try to accommodate based on availability.

We are an impartial service at LJMU so you can discuss any questions and queries freely with us.
