How to book an appointment

The Careers, Employability and Enterprise Team is currently operating a virtual service via telephone and video conference appointments, from 9am-4.30pm, Monday to Friday.

We’re here for you whatever stage of your journey you’re at.  Whether you’re looking for general careers advice or want to discuss your career options, CV or application form reviews, help with postgraduate or teaching applications, advice on work experience, internships, volunteering, part-time work or graduate jobs, interview help or any other careers-related matters, you can take advantage of 30 minute one-to-one appointments with our Advisers.

To book an appointment call 0151-231-3719/2048 (from 9.30am-2.30pm) or email careers@ljmu.ac.uk (allow one working day for a response).

For any students or graduates who are interested in setting up their own business or freelancing, or just want to explore a business idea, email startup@ljmu.ac.uk.

Who will my appointment be with?

Depending on your enquiry, your appointment will be with either an Employability Adviser or Careers Adviser.  When you contact us, we will assess your enquiry and book an appointment with the appropriate Adviser.

Employability Advisers provide practical help for all of your queries relating to:

  • looking for and applying for work experience, voluntary work, internships and graduate jobs
  • CVs and covering letters, application forms and personal statements
  • preparing for job assessments and interviews
  • applications for postgraduate study, teaching and research.

Careers Advisers are here to help you with your strategic career planning, they can provide guidance and support to help you:

  • research and evaluate options with your degree
  • identify careers that suit your strengths, skills and values
  • develop an action plan to help you achieve your career ambitions.
What to expect from an appointment with an Adviser

Rest assured when you attend an appointment with one of our friendly and professionally-trained Advisers, we don’t expect you to have a fully-formed career plan (or indeed any career plan!) or know exactly what your next steps should be.

All appointments are confidential so you can discuss any questions and queries freely with us.

We will adapt our advice to suit whatever stage of your career journey you are at, and part of that could include signposting you to resources and colleagues for further help.

All we expect from you is to complete some short activities before your appointment, tailored to and appropriate for your specific query, and to prepare some notes of key questions or points to go through with the Adviser. This will not only help you to make the most of your time with the Adviser and take a big step forward with your current queries, but will also benefit you in the long term to develop into an independent job seeker and applicant, a key skill for moving up the career ladder throughout your professional working life.

At the start of the appointment, we will discuss your aims for the meeting and what to focus on. The notes and discussion points you have prepared and the activities you completed before the appointment will both be helpful for this. At the end of your meeting, you will agree on and set some action points with your Adviser, so you are clear about the steps you need to take in order to progress. After your appointment, you will receive a short follow-up email summarising your action points and, where relevant, signposting you to additional resources. You will also be asked to complete a short online evaluation to help us continue to improve our service to students.

Appointments in a Careers Zone

Under normal circumstances, as well as telephone and video appointments, one-to-one appointments would also be available in our campus-based Careers Zones (at Aldham Robarts Library and Byrom Street).

However, in light of current guidelines, we are currently only offering face-to-face appointments at a Careers Zone in exceptional circumstances.  Speak to our front of house staff on booking an appointment and we will endeavour to help find a suitable solution.

We look forward to seeing you!
