School of Computer Science and Mathematics careers support

Graduating with experience within the field you’d like to work in could drastically improve your career prospects. That’s why all of our students undertake a one-year placement as part of their course. Students work for fantastic employers, including Lloyds TSB, Corus, Unilever, Lucid Games, GE Global and Eli Lilly.

To ensure you have the skills you need when you graduate, you will study practical modules as part of your course. These modules will give you a solid understanding of how your subject is applied in industry, business and research organisations.

As a maths student, for example, in your final year, you’ll have the chance to complete your own research project. Recent project titles include: 'Search engine optimisation and analysis of Google’s SERP Rank and Page Rank algorithms', 'Predicting injury occurrence in professional football players' and 'Prognostic model for post-operative cancer patients'. 

Our School has close ties with major organisations, such as Unilever, MBNA Bank and HM Treasury. These links help inform our programmes and could provide useful contacts for you as a student.  

The Maths Students Conference is an opportunity for you to gain presentation experience. Students are asked to present their final year maths project at the event and there is a prize for the best talk. 

The School organises a varied programme of events, from company talks to events with student reps. We also host the Employment Careers Fair, which is attended by PhD research students and early career researchers from across the UK.

Our award-winning students have been successful in some tough competitions, including:

Barclays Technology Challenge

In 2014 our students won first place at the Barclays Technology Challenge - a prestigious event organised by Barclays Personal and Corporate Banking, BBC Future Media, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, as well as the Project Management Institute.

Students were asked to integrate social media into BBC iPlayer or to develop an educational platform for the Barclays’ MoneySkills scheme. As finalists, our students got to present their work at BBC Future Media at MediaCityUK. All participants received £100 in Amazon vouchers, plus our students gained work experience at Barclays, Bank of America and the BBC.

Cyber Security Challenge UK

Cyber Security Challenge UK is a series of national games and competitions run each year to identify new talent that can meet the urgent need to attract more skilled professionals into the cyber security sector.

Cisco University Challenge

The Cisco University Challenge is a hackathon-style event involving 20 university teams. The competition is a great opportunity for students to learn about real-life work scenarios. 

Cisco IoE Challenge

The Cisco IoE Challenge is a national computing competition. Recently, the competition lasted 24 hours and around 50 students took part in the event. Our students created some impressive work and came third.

The Centre for Entrepreneurship has been helping students and alumni get their business ideas off the ground since 2003.
