Get to know student support

Coming to university can be a daunting experience but don't worry we are here to make this transition as easy as possible.

If you have any questions about what you need to do before you start or what life is like as a LJMU student, please don't hesitate to get in touch. We are here to help and we have dedicated teams to support you during your time at LJMU.

Student Advice and Wellbeing (SAW)

From managing your money to dealing with homesickness, the teams within SAW offer a wide range of support to students. SAW is based within the Student Life Building on Copperas Hill in the heart of the city and within easy walking distance of all our teaching buildings. It is also possible to book appointments with advisors in other buildings including the Avril Robarts Library, which is ideal if you are studying in the City Campus.

So, if you need any help, have any questions, or want an in person or online appointment, please don't hesitate to email the relevant team:

More information can be found on the SAW webpages.

We also recommend you register for a doctor when you arrive at LJMU, and don’t forget to ensure all of your vaccinations are up to date!

Keeping you safe

We hope you will have an amazing experience studying here and getting to know the city if you are living here for the first time. Liverpool is a safe place and has Purple Flag status, which is awarded to places that promote the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents.

Your safety, health and wellbeing is so important to us here at LJMU and we’re always reviewing and updating the ways we help to keep you safe. If you do need help at any time or want to speak to a trusted and trained member of staff about anything you are concerned about, we are here to help:

  • The Student Life Building is open 24/7 with LJMU security staff always on site.
  • The emergency security phone number will be on the back of your student ID card if you need help on campus: 0151 231 2222.
  • We have a uni police officer, PC Martin Triggs, who you can speak to in confidence, he’s in the Student Life Building every Monday, Thursday and Friday 10am to midday.
  • Report and Support is our online harassment and sexual misconduct reporting platform where you can report anything that might have happened to you or that you witness happen to someone else. By providing your contact details, an advisor from SAW can get in touch with you to make sure you get the support you need, but you may also choose to make your report anonymously.

Your first week at LJMU

Unsure where to go and which activities you must attend during your first week (what we call induction week)? Visit the timetables webpages to find your induction sessions which will be outlined on both your general programme and your personal timetable. As a new student you are expected to attend all induction sessions, these are not optional.

There will also be social and freshers activities that you can book onto with our students’ union, JMSU. Their schedule of events will help you to get to know other new students and introduce you to some of the best things to do in the wonderful city of Liverpool.

If you are unsure about any aspect of starting your studies and induction week, you can email the Student Registration team.
