About your course

The BA (Hons) Health and Social Care with Foundation Year degree will prepare you to support individuals at different points within the life-course.

This exciting course provides a multidisciplinary approach which is essential in today's fast-changing health and social care sector.

Studying health and social care can provide you with the confidence and skills to make a positive difference to people's lives and wellbeing. As people live longer, there is an increasing demand for care and support. Technology in health and social care has also enhanced the opportunities available.

To respond to this, the programme includes modules focussing on a variety of valuable and exciting themes including Environment and Sustainability, Health and Crime, International Perspectives on Health and Working with Disadvantaged Individuals, Families and Communities.

Students who studied on our earlier health and social care-focused programmes have progressed onto a variety of employment opportunities linked to health and social care, as well as postgraduate programmes such as MA Social Work, MSc Public Health, PGCE (teacher training) and MSc Counselling and Psychotherapy.

What you will study on this degree

During your Foundation Year, you will study six modules, each worth 20 credits.

Modules are designated core or option in accordance with professional body requirements, as applicable, and LJMU’s Academic Framework Regulations.

Whilst you are required to study core modules, optional modules are also included to provide you with an element of choice within the programme. The availability of optional modules may vary from year to year and will be subject to meeting minimum student numbers.

Core modules

Skills and Perspectives 1
20 credits

The aim of this module is to facilitate the development of personal, academic and professional skills as a foundation for current and future studies. You will learn the tools to become a confident and independent learner at university, covering a selection of topical subjects in psychology and health.

Healthy Humans
20 credits

This module introduces you to the topic of human health and ill health. You will study human health from a multidisciplinary perspective, giving an overview of the key issues and challenges for those working in this field, which will prepare you to take a scientific approach to health and ill health.

Skills and Perspectives 2
20 credits

This module will facilitate the development of research and data skills as a foundation for your current and future studies to prepare you to apply scientific approaches to solve problems. It will also prepare you to think ethically about conducting research.

Humans and Their Environment
20 credits

This module will give an overview of the interplay between individuals and their surroundings. You will study the way in which the natural environment and built environment shape individuals, and how it impacts on human behaviour and experience. In developing an understanding of scientific research in this area, you will be able to consider the real-world applications of scientific research.

Humans and Health
20 credits

The focus of this module is to introduce you to contemporary perspectives on health. This will explore the theoretical, historical and political context of health, illness and medicine to consider how these matters affect society.

Equality and Diversity
20 credits

The aim of this module is to introduce you to themes that relate to equality and diversity. You will be encouraged to identify and recognise how these issues relate to health and social care.

Skills for Higher Education
20 credits

The aim of this module is to support the development of your academic and personal skills for effective learning at undergraduate level and to enable you to explore the relationship between academic skills and personal and professional development in the context of health and social care.

Development Across the Human Life Course
20 credits

This module will introduce you to key themes and theoretical approaches to life course development. You will also be given the opportunity to relate specific stages of life course development to real life experiences and challenges and begin to develop transferable graduate skills when undertaking the module.

Political Context of Health and Social Care
20 credits

The aim of this module is to allow you to able to articulate contemporary political, social and economic perspectives as they impact on the delivery and development of health and social care provision in the UK.

Media, Technology, Health and Society
20 credits

You will be able to discuss relevant theoretical models of media engagement and technological advancement as they relate to health and social care, and the effect this has on individuals and contemporary society.

Core modules

Safeguarding
20 credits

The aim of this module is for you to able to apply knowledge of safeguarding to real life situations where children or vulnerable adults might be at risk and to formulate context specific information for service users as well as safeguarding policies for work-based settings.

Changing Contexts of Health and Social Care
20 credits

This module will enable you to develop your understanding of the range of organisations and individuals who make up the contemporary health social care sector. It will build upon your personal interests, motivations and career aspirations.

Gender and Sexuality
20 credits

The aim of this module is to recognise gender and sexuality as contestable concepts that have a profound impact on health & social care.

Research Methods in Health and Social Care
20 credits

The module will provide you with grounding in the key research methods used in health and social care. It will prepare you for your own research activity, as well as enabling you to become more critical consumers of the quality of evidence used in the development of health and social care policies and practices.

International Perspectives on Health
20 credits

This module allows you to develop your knowledge on health from an international viewpoint, focusing on low and middle-income countries and understand the challenges of health and health care in context of resource poor nations.

Health and Crime
20 credits

This module will provide you with the opportunity to explore the factors that impact health and crime. You will be able to analyse aspects of the causes and consequences of crime in relation to health and social care.

Teaching and work-related learning

Excellent facilities and learning resources

We adopt an active blended learning approach, meaning you will experience a combination of face-to-face and online learning during your time at LJMU. This enables you to experience a rich and diverse learning experience and engage fully with your studies. Our approach ensures that you can easily access support from your personal tutor, either by meeting them on-campus or via a video call to suit your needs.

Innovative and flexible teaching methods are embedded throughout, including interactive lectures, tutorials, case studies, visits, workshops, online activities and learning resources.

A semester study abroad option is available at Level 5. To help facilitate this, students are encouraged to speak to their Personal Tutors about this in Level 4.

Work-related Learning

Work-related learning is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to put into practice skills and knowledge gained during the course and getting a feel for the kind of work you would eventually like to pursue after graduating.

Placements​

There are no mandatory formal placements included in BA (Hons) Health and Social Care with Foundation Year, however we actively encourage you to undertake volunteering experiences within the health and social care sector. Not only will this give you the opportunity to reflect on your learning in practice and enhance you interpersonal skills, but it will also improve your CV for when you graduate.

There are lots of opportunities for volunteer placments across Liverpool and the Merseyside region.

CareerSmart Programme    

In Level 4, all students will have an opportunity to engage with the CareerSmart programme as an integral part of a core module of study. Once you have completed this, a wide range of other career-related provision and services will be available to support your development throughout your studies. The new CareerSmart e-learning tool will introduce you to the steps involved in making informed choices about your career. It will enable you to consider your strengths and development areas, your career motivators, the options available to you and the necessary steps to take to achieve your career goals.

Support and guidance

Dedicated personal tutor, plus study skills support

The University aims to provide you with access to appropriate and timely information, along with a range of support services and guidance, to help ensure you succeed on your course and have a great University expereince. 

When you enrol, you will be assigned a Personal Tutor. You Personal Tutor is there to provide academic support and when necessary signpost you to the appropriate University services.

Students are able to access a range of professional services including:

  • Advice on practical aspects of study and how to use these opportunities to support and enhance your personal and academic development. This includes support for placements and careers guidance.
  • Student Advice and Wellbeing Services provide support in areas including: student funding and financial matters, disability, advice and support to international students, study support, accommodation, health, wellbeing and counselling.
  • JMSU - your students' union, is also there to help when you need it.
  • LJMU Library Services - from guides on how to reference correctly to finding speciailist resources, our Libary Team is here to help.

Assessment

Assessment varies depending on the modules you choose, but will usually include a combination of exams and coursework.

Ceri Anwen Jones

Programme Leader

Ceri joined Liverpool John Moores as a Senior Lecturer in 2007 and has enjoyed the opportunity to develop and teach on a variety of academic programmes. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and her current research interests relate to kindness and wellbeing in higher education, particularly within leadership and management.

"I really enjoy being able to work collaboratively with students and  colleagues to create interesting and exciting research and learning opportunities. Being involved in curriculum design is also rewarding as it provides the chance to be innovative and creative."

What you can expect from your School

Part of the City Campus, the School of Nursing and Allied Health works with a wide range of health and social care organisations to design and deliver a dynamic suite of courses. In addition to specialist clinical practice suite facilities, you will find high quality seminar rooms, IT suites and lecture theatres, plus a café and social spaces. The School’s flagship Tithebarn Building adjoins the Avril Robarts Library, which is open 24/7 during semesters.
