Sensors and Communications Group

At the Sensors and Communications group, we carry out applied research in collaboration with industries. The work can be broadly divided into the following areas:

  • New sensors and smart devices for Industry 4.0 applications
  • Non-destructive testing for reliability improvements of microelectronics
  • Next generation solder materials for power electronics and green electric transport
  • High-resolution medical ultrasound imaging
  • Ultrasonic material characterisation
  • Acoustic tweezing of microparticles and biological samples
  • Energy-efficient protocols for wireless sensor and mobile networks
  • Biased random algorithms for resilience in heterogeneous networks and data fields
  • Innovative sensor systems for monitoring
  • Intelligent algorithms for indoor mapping and localisation
  • Community clustering for Big Data analysis
  • Ethical AI design and formalisation

The research that the Research Group conducts is supported by grants from the UK Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC), British Council, Newton Fund, Horizon Europe Grant, Innovate UK, etc. The researchers from the Group are working in collaboration with many academic and industry researchers from UK and international organisations. The team’s research has generated a number of publications in reputed journals.

Projects

  • A Knowledge Transfer Project (KTP) project has successfully produced prototypes for indoor mapping and localisation to help first responders in emergency services. The IP generated has been patented through international registration. The project is progressing through its Route to Market (RTM) activities
  • Projects on ‘Innovative sensor systems for industrial monitoring’ have been successfully carried out through CW4.0 ERDF project, for DTE Engineering, Knitwire, RSTARS etc
  • Go-GREEN, COP26 Trilateral Research Initiative grant by the British Council
  • ReACTIVE TOO - Reliable electronics for tomorrow’s active systems, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA): RISE

Currently, there are two PhD projects in the area of mobile sensor networks, and two PhD students working on biomedical ultrasound and the NDT for reliability improvements of microelectronics.
