About your course
The Business Management programme blends contemporary business theory with the practical application of technical business skills
As a Business Management student you will become competent in:
- digital analytical expertise

Upon graduation, students will also be well prepared for the increasing challenges of global business and its environment.
The programme has six core modules at level 4, which form the essential commercial underpinnings for a global career in the digital business world. After completing this first year, students can then specialise and gain accreditation in their chosen area of expertise.
You are encouraged to complete an optional year work placement in industry between the second and third year of study. This will provide you with a richer overall experience. It will also significantly enhance your employment prospects upon graduating, as you will have gained work experience that you can draw upon when completing application forms and interviews.
Liverpool Business School has partnerships with business schools at universities and colleges across Europe, in the USA and in China. Liverpool Business School recognises the importance of providing cultural enrichment opportunities for students and offers students on this programme the opportunity to spend a semester in their second year at a partner university abroad as part of their studies. There are also many supported opportunities for activities at partner universities during summer vacations. All study abroad opportunities are in English.
The Foundation Year is ideal if you have the interest and ability to study for a degree, but do not have the qualifications to enter directly onto the Business with Marketing honours degree programme yet. Once you pass the Foundation Year (level 3) you will progress directly onto the first year of the honours degree. If you are a full-time UK student, you will qualify for student financial support for the full duration of your course (subject to eligibility criteria).

This module aims to facilitate your development of personal, academic and professional skills as a foundation for your current and future studies in Business related subjects. It will equip you with the tools to become confident and independent learners at university.
Understanding Business Organisations and Operations
This module provides you with an introduction to the world of business, the types of business and structures, the functional areas, and management theories and challenges faced by business in today's commercial world.
Essentials of Management
This module introduces you to management theory. This foundation module will develop your appreciation, understanding and application of management and professionalism in different career pathways and specialist areas.
Introduction to Marketing and PR Communications
This module gives you an understanding of the key concepts and terminology used in marketing and public relations. It also gives you a knowledge and understanding of your role within organisations and explores the factors that can influence consumer behaviour.
Data Analysis Techniques for Business
This module equips you with the technical skills to be able to design and produce Microsoft Excel spreadsheets for business use, and to facilitate the development of basic analytical skills.
Programme Case Study
This module develops your independent learning and expertise in an area of business relating to your target programme. Through a co-creation process your subject interests will be harnessed to enable you to develop your knowledge in a self-selected topic area. The module aims to be flexible to enable you to explore an area of interest to you and you will be assessed in a manner that supports this.
Business and the Economy
This module provides you with an ability to understand the importance of the UK economic environment in which firms and financial institutions operate. It enables you to consider the consequences of economic policy decisions on business.
Data Analysis for Business
This module introduces you to key numerical techniques used in the business world to aid decision making. It aims to provide the mathematical and statistical foundations that are necessary in any area of business.
Finance and Accounting for Managers
This module provides you with both a theoretical understanding and practical application of management-level accounting and finance skills. This includes how an organisation first decides which business structure to form; how trading activities are recorded and evaluated; and how to decide which products to make or buy.
Principles of Marketing
A comprehensive introduction to the principles of marketing in various market settings. You will learn about building profitable relationships with customers and co-creating value in fast-changing and interdependent global marketplaces, justifying marketing strategies, providing solutions, exercising creativity and demonstrating theory and practice by delivering a marketing plan for a real company. You will develop an understanding of, and the ability to examine, the internal and external forces and be introduced to a range of strategic and tactic marketing tools that are vital for an informed approach to marketing decision making.
Operations and Technology Management
This module introduces you to how organisations produce goods and/or services. It is a broad subject that encompasses process and technology management and design, product design, production planning and control, quality management, supply chain management and inventory management. This module is designed to introduce you to the theory and practice of these areas which can be studied in more depth in Levels 5 and 6 of the degree programme.
Managing People and Organisations
This module aims to give you an understanding of some of the theoretical and practical applications relevant to the management of people and their behaviour in organisations. It looks at work psychology underpinning management theory and introduces you to the role of the manager and leader, the management process and contemporary management practice.
Personal and Professional Development
The module will provide opportunities to develop knowledge, skills, experiences, behaviours attributes and attitudes required for the transitions from student to graduate; introducing strategies that enhance employability and career choices, such as self-reflection, career management, selection and interview technique development. This module also develops your academic skills of critical reading, researching, writing and presenting.
The Digital Economy
This module provides you with both a theoretical and practical understanding as to what key considerations organisation(s) should evaluate in order to create, develop and maintain a web-enabled business. Given the significant development of both web technologies and legislative changes, you will become aware as to how strategic business decisions need to incorporate such aspects in order to ensure long term viability.
This project introduces you to project management theory, terms and concepts. You will develop an appreciation of the history and development of project management, together with an examination of examples of project application to a variety of situations. Additionally, there is an exploration of the various definitions and applications of projects, permitting you to explore the advantages and disadvantages of project management within a business environment.
Sustainability and the Circular Economy
This module enables you to develop an understanding of the philosophical underpinnings of ethical decision making in a global business environment and to appreciate the impact of global business on host nations. It aims to introduce you to contemporary issues facing business in order that you may incorporate ethical, environmental and socially responsible dimensions into management thinking - particularly strategic decision making.
Employability and Enterprise
This module aims to provide you with the skills and knowledge to succeed in the graduate employment market.
This module aims to develop your understanding of the fundamental practices of human resource management in an organisation and their underpinning theory. You will learn how to recruit, select, performance manage, talent manage, develop and engage, reward and retain staff.
HR Models and Metrics
This module aims to develop your understanding of the role of data in human recourse (HR) practice and the range of delivery models and strategic choices in managing and coordinating the HR Function.
Supply Chain Management
This module provides you with a thorough understanding of modern supply chain management with a focus on gaining and maintaining competitive advantage through the supply chain.
This module develops your understanding of key concepts, theories and principles of procurement/purchasing, as part of the core modules taken in Level 4. It will enable you to apply different concepts and best practices in procurement management, such as strategic sourcing, category management, performance and risk management approaches.
Customer Relationship Management
This module aims to encourage understanding, knowledge and critical appraisal of the strategic management of customer relations. It relates Customer Relationship Management (CRM) to delivering value in e-business in order to equip you with the skills and ability to play an effective role in enabling your organisations to succeed in realising the strategic potential of CRM.
This module enables you to gain an in depth understanding of trends and business models in the Digital Economy with particular focus on Digital Marketing. You will analyse a range of digital marketing practices in terms of their underlying business models, compare the impact of digital marketing practices on the Marketing function, and apply and demonstrate the principles of effective digital presence and marketing practices in the development of an online portfolio.
Finance of International Trade
This module provides you with the practical knowledge and skills required by business companies in international trade. You will also develop the ability to critically evaluate the major issues/risks faced by exporters and importers, alongside the knowledge and skills to mitigate those risks.
Investment and Financial Analysis
This modules enables you to make evidence-based investment decisions and analyse financial statements and performance in order to ensure sustainability, liquidity and profitability.
Project Management Methodologies
This module aims to introduce you to current project management methodologies. You will develop a solid understanding of project processes, procedures and essential skills and knowledge needed to apply a structured project management methodology to the management of organisational projects.
Leading and Influencing Projects
Project management is key to delivering strategic value within an organisation and it involves far more than a time plan, a budget and a risk register. This module explores the complexities and issues concerning effective project leadership and how to best meet project challenges. You will explore the importance of managing, leading and influencing a range of interlinked stakeholders, and develop an appreciation of the tools and approaches used by effective project leaders.
Global Sustainability, Issues and Opportunities
The aims of this module are for you to develop a broad understanding of sustainability, appreciate how the worlds current sustainability challenges are affecting and are affected by business, and to be able to competently discuss topics across a wide range of disciplines including business, economics, social issues and ecology. It will enable you to make informed decisions that incorporate ethical, environmental and responsible dimensions into management thinking - particularly strategic decision making.
CSR- Creating Shared Values
This module provides you with the knowledge to operate shared value, which is a management strategy where organisations in all sectors perform a social as well as an economic function. It is an evolved form of CSR and philanthropy that emphasises sustainability and eliminates any harm that business has on people, communities and the planet. Leaders champion shared value and it is embedded in organisations so that it is the responsibility of all its members who are given the tools and motivation to achieve sustainable and resilient competitive value.
Sandwich Year - BSc Business Management
The aim is to provide students with an extended period of work experience at an approved partner that will complement their programme of study at LJMU. This will give students the opportunity to develop professional skills relevant to their programme of study as well as the attitude and behaviours necessary for employment in a diverse and changing environment. This extended placement forms a key part of a sandwich degree. All placements need to be assessed and approved prior to commencement in line with the LJMU Placement Learning Code of Practice. The Code of Practice requires students to conduct themselves in a professional and responsible manner during the placement - failure to do so may lead to the placement being terminated prematurely. Placements are normally for one calendar year on a full-time basis. Split placements of a shorter duration may be permissible. There is an expectation that a minimum of 1200 hours will be spent in the workplace.
Study Semester Abroad - BSc Business Management
The aim is to provide students with a semester of study at an approved overseas partner that will replace one semester of their LJMU programme at level 5.This is a semester of full-time study at an approved higher education institution which will replace one semester of level 5 study at LJMU. The modules to be studied must be agreed in advance, and must be an appropriate substitute for the modules being replaced. Assuming successful completion of this semester, mark-bearing credit will be awarded by the Faculty Recognition Group. The grade conversion scale to be used will be made available in advance of the semester abroad.
Study Year Abroad Business Management
This module provides you with an integrative and contemporary approach to the study of strategic management. It examines the role that this plays within the overall performance of a corporation across a range of geographical, organisational and industrial contexts.
Strategic decision making
This modules is designed to simulate the Strategic Decision Making process, requiring students to apply the knowledge and skills they have developed throughout the programme, finance, marketing, CSR, economic etc, as well as their understanding of the Strategic Management gained in Semester 1.
This module enables final year students to apply their knowledge and skills to a properly researched business problem or issue.
Business Plan Consultancy
This module aims to enable you to understand business problems and issues, particularly at strategic level. In the process you will acquire the skills and knowledge to formulate a business plan of sufficient robustness and rigour to be acceptable to business executives.
Corporate Governance (CG) and Intellectual Property Rights
This module provides you with the knowledge and understanding of how companies face the central challenge of delivering best practice corporate governance in the face of constant media scrutiny and increasing stakeholder demands. Focusing upon the UK Corporate Governance Code and placing this within a global context, the module combines the key components of boardroom structures and performance with a strong focus on current issues related to governance.
Personal and Professional Ethics
This module is designed to enable you to gain an awareness of personal and professional conflicts arising through day-to-day activities. Adopting a tool-kit approach as to how to respond to such challenges the module will provide you with the necessary concepts, tools and theories for the challenges they will face in the workplace in understanding how ethical decision-making works.
Contemporary Project Management and Practice
This module provides a focus on transferable soft skills. Through a focus on problem solving, this module allows you to investigate and diagnose using a range of applicable models, project issues and solutions that lead to improved project performance.
Strategic Corporate and Project Finance
The aim of this module is to enable you to evaluate corporate financial decisions that form an essential part of strategic decision making and a project business case funding, financial investment appraisal, financial control, risk management and performance evaluation.
Contemporary Economic Policy
This module introduces you to the exciting areas of economic policy controversies. This module captures the essence of economics and real-world issues and assesses how policy decisions impact on people and firms.
The aims of this module is for you to develop an understanding of the models and theory underpinning strategic decision making in Human Resource Management (HRM) and the contribution of strategic HRM to organisational success.
This module provides you with an understanding of the purpose of employment regulation and its role in management decision making. You will learn to manage contemporary human resource issues strategically and lawfully with particular regard to unfair dismissal law.
This module enables you to analyse the principles and techniques involved in marketing strategically within the global context for business. Emphasis is placed on the identification of challenges presented by international marketing to equip you to deal with differences, opportunities and threats emerging from diverse economic, demographic, political/legal, cultural, technical and competitive environments.
This module provides you with the tools and engagement in Strategic Branding of self to support long-term wider personal impact.
Logistics and Transportation
This module aims to develop your understanding of logistics and transportation systems. It forms an integral part of the Operations and Supply Chain Management pathway and builds on concepts introduced in the Level 5 modules in this pathway. It will enable you to assess different transport modes and to propose appropriate capacity planning and control approaches.
This module develops your understanding regarding the application of methodologies within business quality management. You will be introduced to the concepts of Six Sigma and Lean and their associated tools and techniques as means to improve process performance.
Teaching and work-related learning
Excellent facilities and learning resources
We adopt an active blended learning approach, meaning you will experience a combination of face-to-face and online learning during your time at LJMU. This enables you to experience a rich and diverse learning experience and engage fully with your studies. Our approach ensures that you can easily access support from your personal tutor, either by meeting them on-campus or via a video call to suit your needs.
Subjects are delivered via a balance of formal lectures, informal workshops, online activities and seminars. These allow students to discuss, develop and practice their understanding of particular theories and principles.
Additionally professional speakers from industry share their own experience and perspectives with students, enabling them to gain invaluable insight into the workplace.
Practical off-site visits to organisations such as Jaguar Landrover, Typhoo, Vauxhall Motors and CAT (Centre for Alternative Technologies), allow students to observe how theory is put into practice. This helps provide context to theoretical underpinnings and can also help students select their future career pathway.
The programme uses business technology to support learning. This includes simulation, digital analytics, 'live' textbooks , use of the Bloomberg information centre, visits to our sensor city campus and case studies supported by our Canvas virtual learning environment.
You will gain valuable work-related experience when you work as part of a team of 'student consultants' on your live business project as part of the assessment requirements.
Early in level 5 you can decide whether to undertake a paid 48-week work placement in the UK or overseas. You would do this placement between level 5 and 6.
Placements provide the opportunity to gain experience of what its like to work in industry as well as giving you a chance to put your learning into practice, develop personal skills and enhance your employability. A significant number of our students also go on to secure employment with their placement provider after graduating.
Liverpool Business School's Employability Support Unit will help you find suitable vacancies and support you during the application process and whilst on placement.
Placements are available in a wide variety of roles, in organisations of all sectors and sizes, from large multinationals to small and medium enterprises. Organisations we have previously placed Business students at include Unilever, Liverpool Football Club, Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Bentley.
During your placement, you will work on real-life business problems and have the opportunity to suggest ideas that may be implemented by your placement organisation.
Some students choose to spend their placement year abroad. Previous students have been placed with Airbus in Toulouse, Tom Tom in Amsterdam and Toyota in Brussels.
Support and guidance
Dedicated personal tutor, plus study skills support
The programme team provides a supportive environment in which to study. The 'student-centred' approach of your tutors will ensure that you are provided with the individual support and guidance needed. A personal tutor will be assigned to help you with your personal development and career planning.
In addition, each module leader offers drop in opportunities for you to clarify your understanding and, if needed, provide further detailed feedback on a piece of work.
Assessment varies depending on the modules you choose, but will usually include a combination of exams and coursework.
We understand that students perform differently depending on the type of assessment they are given and so a range of assessment methods are used on the programme. These include written assignments (essays/reports, individual/group), exams, practical assessments, individual and group presentations, portfolios, reflective logs and a dissertation. There could be up to three assessments per module, for example a presentation, report and exam.
Written feedback is provided within 15 working days of submission, but you can also get face-to-face feedback from your Module Tutor. We believe that constructive feedback is vital in helping you identify your strengths as well as the areas where you may need to develop further.

What you can expect from your School
The School is based in the Redmonds Building, in the heart of the bustling Mount Pleasant Campus and Liverpool 's growing Knowledge Quarter. The building is home to high quality lecture theatres and seminar rooms, social spaces, a café and a roof terrace with far reaching views of the cityscape and welsh hills. It is only a short walk from LJMU 's Aldham Robarts Library, which contains all the resources you will require for your studies, and is open seven days a week.

Applicants should be able to communicate effectively both orally and in their written work and possess the self discipline to manage their time and tasks effectively while at LJMU.
