Projects that simulate the type of work you would be doing in a quantity surveying practice or in a contracting organisation are an important element of this degree course.
Support and guidance
Dedicated personal tutor plus study skills support.
There is a high level of support for students on this course, particularly if you choose to undertake a work placement. The Built Environment Industry Unit will help you to identify potential employers, both in the UK and overseas (though overseas placements are less common), and will support you during your placement, with occasional visits from a tutor to check on your progress.
The Unit acts as a link between you and a large number of organisations that take part in our annual employers’ day and get involved in employer interest/support groups. Activities like these give you the best possible chance of securing a placement and making useful contacts for your future employment.
You will be appointed a Personal Tutor when you are inducted onto the course. They will be responsible for assisting you and providing guidance and care on academic and pastoral matters and also on the development of your Personal Development Plans (PDP’s) which form an integral part of your programme and development.
In addition each member of staff has surgery hours which allow you to 'drop in' to discuss academic issues on a one to one basis.
LJMU aims to make an international opportunity available to every student. You may be able to study abroad as part of your degree, either in Europe or the US. You could take part in a work placement in Europe under the ERASMUS+ scheme or apply for one of our prestigious worldwide internship programmes. There are also opportunities to attend a two-week summer school with one of our worldwide partners.

This part-time BSc Quantity Surveying course focuses on the factors that affect the procurement and construction of a building or structure over its complete life cycle, with particular emphasis on the economic, legal, financial and managerial considerations of the construction process.
Once you have developed the technical skills required of a quantity surveyor, you will apply them to projects that are based on ‘real’ construction scenarios. This way of working not only gives you invaluable hands-on practice, it also allows you to develop a variety of transferable skills that will give you a professional edge when you eventually start applying for your first quantity surveying job.
Strong links with industry mean that you will have opportunities to meet quantity surveyors and other professionals working in the construction industry through guest lectures and site visits.
Industry links also provide useful contacts should you decide to undertake a 40-week industrial placement after your second year. In addition these professionals and others attend the Employers Event held annually by the school and provide you with additional networking opportunities that will help facilitate you obtaining work locally, nationally and internationally.

During level 4, students gain basic knowledge and theory of the quantity surveying discipline. They gain an introduction to quantity surveying in practice, law and measurement. They will study key themes around construction technology, law and management, and get involved in exciting collaborative interdisciplinary activities. At level 4 students also become skilled in academic and digital literacy.

During level 5, students are exposed to the application and integration of key quantity surveying themes. In particular, students learn about managing construction projects, procurement and construction technology and a more focused legal perspective of building contracts and advanced measurement and administration. Students' progress their practical quantity surveying skills through learning about Building Information Technologies (BIM) technologies, and get involved in collaborative interdisciplinary activities in an exciting project environment. Students are also introduced to research methods skills and knowledge management.

During level 6, students focus on key concepts around the management and strategic implications of the quantity surveying discipline. This includes learning about procurement strategies and management and entrepreneurships strategies. You will also be exposed to financial management during the project lifecycle and engineering measurement. Students will again be involved in collaborative interdisciplinary activities during a level 6 project, as well as completing a final year research project.
Finally, you may have the opportunity to participate in an exciting international field visit during their final year of study.

Teaching and learning
Excellent facilities and learning resources.
You can expect to spend on average 8-10 hours in the classroom which may be in the form of lectures, tutorials and workshops, combined with your own research using our library and the web. You should spend around 15 hours per week in private study.

The majority of staff that service the programme are themselves Chartered Surveyors and will support and direct you towards achieving your ambition to become a professional Quantity Surveyor.
Assessment and feedback
Assessment varies depending on the modules you choose, but will usually include a combination of exams and coursework.
All students perform differently depending on how they are assessed, which is why we use a combination of assessment methods and up to three per module. Assessments include exams (open and closed book), coursework (essays, technical reports and reviews) and individual and group presentations. Your tutors will give prompt and constructive feedback via Canvas (our virtual learning environment), face-to-face or as written comments. This will help you to identify your strengths as well as the areas where you may need to put in more work.

We are looking for students who are keen to learn new skills and develop those they already possess. It is also important that students are able to manage time and tasks effectively as an individual and as part of a team, use appropriate sources to find and organise information and select and critically evaluate information in order to analyse problems.
If you would like to develop these skills further, have a strong interest in this subject area and want to work effectively within it, then this is the course for you! International applications will be considered in line with UK qualifications.

Additional entry requirement information
Applicants studying a HNC, HND or Foundation Degree in Construction or Quantity Surveying will be considered for direct entry into Level 5. Typically, a pass in a HNC opr HND would be required. For relevant Foundation Degrees, a minimum of 60% overall. Each case will be considered on an individual basis.

Please note that the amount of money you will receive as a student is dependent on where in the UK you normally live (i.e. England, Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland), your household income and if you are going to live in your parental home or elsewhere while you study.
The information below relates to the 2020/21 academic year as the Government has not yet released information for 2021/22. As soon as this is available, we will update these web pages and associate information.
LJMU's scholarships are open to all new full-time Home undergraduates that are liable to pay tuition fees. These awards are not income assessed, they are based on excellence. If successful, you will be awarded a scholarship for each year of your course subject to satisfactory progress. In 2020/21 scholarships are worth between £1,000 and £10,000 per year. The money you receive doesn’t have to be paid back.
The LJMU bursary is automatically paid to eligible students – you do not need to apply for it. In 2020/21 the annual bursary is £500, which works out at £1,500 over a three year degree.
LJMU bursaries are means-tested and you don’t have to pay them back; they are intended to help you meet some of the costs associated with being a student.

In 2020/21 the annual tuition fee for full time, undergraduate, home and EU students is £9,250. You will be charged a fee for each year of your course. The University reserves the right to increase fees up to the maximum permitted by law or government policy in the second and subsequent years of your course. Generally, these fee increases are linked to RPIX inflation (Retail Price Index excluding mortgage interest payments).
The important thing to remember is that you don't have to pay your tuition fees upfront - subject to meeting eligibility criteria, you can take out a tuition fee loan for each year of your course.
You can also take out a maintenance or living cost loan for each year of your course to cover your living expenses, such as rent and food.
You don’t start repaying your student loans until after you’ve left university and start earning at least £26,575**.

Living expenses (maintenance) loan
In addition to your tuition fees, eligible full-time undergraduate students can also apply for a maintenance loan to cover living costs. If you’re eligible, you can take out a loan for each year of your course.
The amount you’ll receive will depend on where in the UK you normally live and your household income. This money will be paid into your bank or building society account in three instalments and it’s up to you to budget for your living costs.

Paying back your student loans
You only start repaying your student loans the April after you have graduated or left university and start earning £26,575* or above. Repayments are based on a percentage of your salary not how much you have borrowed from the Student Loans Company. Repayments are currently set at 9% of any income over the threshold (which is currently set at £26,575).*

Professional accreditation / links
This degree has a very high standing both professionally and academically. It is fully accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and, if you complete work experience, can count towards the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence. It also grants full exemption from the Chartered Association of Building Engineers exams.
Please note: this programme is not suitable for students who require a Tier 4 visa. Due to immigration requirements, Tier 4 international students must study on a full-time basis.
