About your course
The BEng (Hons) Marine and Mechanical Engineering and with Foundation Year at Liverpool John Moores University is the ideal course if you are interested in this subject but lack the necessary qualifications to study it at degree level.
The Foundation Year is ideal if you have the ability to study for a degree but don’t have the qualifications to enter directly onto the Mechanical and Marine Engineering honours degree programme. Once you pass the Foundation Year you will progress directly onto the first year of the honours degree. If you are a full-time UK student, you will qualify for student financial support for the full duration of your course (subject to eligibility criteria).
About the BEng (Hons) Mechanical and Marine Engineering degree
This degree will give you an in-depth understanding of the scientific principles and advanced design technology as well as the problem solving and management skills required to be a successful marine engineer.
This is one of the UK’s leading engineering schools, with a supportive staff team and excellent facilities including engine test facilities, full marine engine room and bridge simulators, materials testing laboratories and digital design studios, which you have full use of in practical sessions. Links with national and international companies such as Bibby Line, Rolls Royce, Shell and Castrol mean that the course is tailored to the needs of employers and, as an extension of this, we offer you the opportunity to undertake a year’s paid placement in industry.

Both the BEng and MEng degrees in Marine Engineering are accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and provide the educational base for graduates to gain Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
Accredited MEng degrees enable graduates to gain CEng status without further study, while accredited BEng degrees will require a further period of study after graduation. If you have demonstrated consistently strong performance at the end of Level 5, you may be offered the opportunity to transfer to the MEng programme. Gaining professional status will be of considerable benefit to you in your future career especially if you join a multinational company and/or need to have your qualification recognised overseas.
The Department has held over 30 years of continuous professional accreditation by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
The MEng and BEng in Mechanical and Marine Engineering programmes can both lead to marine engineering officer of the watch certification and academic exemption from Class 1 and 2 Engineering Certificates of Competency issued by the MCA.

Marine Engineers find employment in a variety of areas in the maritime industry both shore based and sea-going. Specific employment sectors include marine surveying (with companies including Lloyds of London), ship and port operations, offshore structures, petrochemicals, offshore renewable energy, and power generation.

This module aims to provide an introduction to technical computing and the application of computers in the implementation of simple algorithms.
Engineering and Technology Practice
This module aims to develop your practical skills by applying what you learn in your mathematics and physics modules. It will provide an experience of experimental planning, execution and report writing, as well as activities aimed at developing problem solving skills.
Foundation Mathematics for Engineering and Technology 1
This module aims to provide you with the mathematical knowledge, understanding and skills which are required to use mathematics as an analytical tool in engineering and technology subjects.
Foundation Mathematics for Engineering and Technology 2
This module aims to build upon the material covered in Mathematics 1 by exploring more advanced topics in Mathematics. This includes an introduction to elementary techniques in Calculus.
Foundation Physics - Mechanics, Materials and Waves
The aim of this module is to provide the required knowledge regarding mechanics, materials and waves needed for those who have not studied A-level physics to be able to study an engineering or technology related degree.
Foundation Physics - Particles, Fields and Electricity
The aim of this module is to provide the required knowledge regarding particles, fields, electricity and electronics needed for those who have not studied A-level physics to be able to study an engineering or technology related degree.
This module will introduce you to the software development process in order to be able to use a range of computer programming environment and their applications. You will also be able to develop problem solving skills in computing and wider engineering or technology areas.

This module will provide a foundation in engineering mathematics for its application to the solution of engineering problems.

This module will provide a foundation in engineering mathematics for its application to the solution of engineering problems.
Applied Mechanics 1
This module will introduce you to the essential principles of applied mechanics. The module will provide you with an introduction to essential applied mechanics (static force systems, strength of materials, kinematics, dynamics, impulse and momentum).
Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics 1
The aim of this module is to introduce you to the essential principles of Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics. This module introduces some of the most important fundamental ideas behind the development of core engineering disciplines of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.
This module covers the essential elements of materials science and manufacturing technology required by engineers studying mechanical, marine, design disciplines. You will develop a good understanding on the structures, properties and processing methods of different groups of materials and be able to apply basic techniques for materials testing and selection.
Engineering Practice 1
This module aims to introduce you to a range of general engineering practices and standards.
Electrical and Electronic Engineering
This module will enable you to develop an understanding of the physical principles of electrical and electronic systems, and to analyse simple circuits which incorporate passive and active components.
Engineering Mathematics 2
This module will provide a foundation in engineering mathematics for application to the solution of engineering problems and provides a basis in advanced engineering mathematics in mechanical and electrical engineering.
Materials and Processes
The aim of this module is to gain a thorough understanding of the properties and applications of a range of structural engineering materials and their associated manufacturing processes.
Applied Mechanics 2
This module will provide the means for solving many basic engineering problems by learning the principles of mechanics for rigid and deformable solid bodies.
Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics 2
This module will provide an insight into thermal plant cycles and the physical behaviour of fluid flow and heat transfer by application of the theory to practical engineering examples.
Engineering Practice 2
The aim of this module is to develop the skills required to practice as a professional engineer. This module provides a broad range of experiences including laboratory's and report writing skills required of a professional engineer.
Marine Electrical Systems
The aim of this module is to provide a comprehensive introduction to Marine Instrumentation and Electrical Engineering. The module will concentrate on the principles, construction and operation of marine instrumentation, ac and dc motors and generators, and associated distribution and protection systems.
Marine Design and Technology
This module will provide a comprehensive introduction to Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture and Ship Construction. The module will concentrate on main and auxiliary propulsion systems, ship stability and construction features.
The project aims to provide a supervised but independent led learning activity in a relevant area of engineering or technology. It aims to develop the academic, technical and organisational skills required to undertake a substantial individual engineering project from specification to conclusion.
The module will introduce computational engineering analysis using finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and will extend your experience and skill with the aid of industry standard software.
This module is designed to develop the core management techniques required to design, implement and plan a new product or process.
Marine Design and Propulsion
The module aims to analyse many of the critical marine systems associated with ships including aspects of safety within the marine industry.
Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer
The aim of this module is to further develop the essential principles of Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer.
This module will introduce the essential principles of Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics and will take an in-depth look into the operation and thermodynamic cycle of engineering plant.
The aim of the module is to provide an in-depth understanding of advanced engineering materials together with techniques for material property and performance improvements.
This module will enable you to develop an understanding of the performance of materials and structures subjected to load in terms of deformation based failure, fracture and fatigue.
Manufacturing Processes and Industrial Automation
This module will deliver a broad introduction to industrial automation, and cover policy and logistical considerations that drive process solutions. You will work on automation and assembly problems and cultivate a deep understanding of electronic, electrical and pneumatic control.
Dynamics and Control
Within this module, you will develop knowledge and experience of analytic and simulative methods applied to modelling of open and closed loop engineering systems with multi-physics dynamics.

Excellent facilities and learning resources
We adopt an active blended learning approach, meaning you will experience a combination of face-to-face and online learning during your time at LJMU. This enables you to experience a rich and diverse learning experience and engage fully with your studies. Our approach ensures that you can easily access support from your personal tutor, either by meeting them on-campus or via a video call to suit your needs.
Teaching is via a combination of lectures supported by small, group tutorials, online activities, seminars and practical sessions. Initially formal teaching accounts for approximately 23 hours of your week, but decreases to around 14 hours as the course progresses and independent study time increases from approximately 27 to 36 hours per week.
This course offers an invaluable opportunity to undertake an industrial placement after Level 5. This experience cannot be underestimated as it will give you a chance to put into practice what you have learnt at LJMU, enhance your skills and provide a taste of what it's really like to work in industry. It will also give you a head start when you come to negotiate your way around the competitive job market.
Support and guidance
Dedicated personal tutor, plus study skills support
You will be allocated a personal tutor to discuss course-related issues, work on a personal development plan and set your own targets.
Should you decide to undertake a year’s placement, a placement tutor will liaise between you and potential employers and help you to find a suitable post. Once you are settled in your placement, you will have regular support from an academic staff member who will visit you in your workplace to check on progress.
Assessment varies depending on the modules you choose, but will usually include a combination of exams and coursework.
Assessment is usually via a combination of exams and coursework, and sometimes by a portfolio of work, depending on the subject. A final year project gives you the chance to work independently and contributes considerably to your final mark.
Your tutors will give prompt and constructive feedback via Canvas (our virtual learning environment), face-to-face or as written comments. This will help you to identify your strengths as well as the areas where you may need to put in more work.
